Complications of High Blood Pressure Persistent high blood pressure can result in multiple complications.

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
Some people with hypertension may react with alarm when they check their blood pressure at home or at the drugstore and the reading is elevated. It's not unusual for people with an isolated finding of elevated blood pressure to show up at the local emergency department with sudden concern, but in many cases, the real concern is not a single high reading, but the cumulative effect of persistent uncontrolled hypertension. Hypertension is a risk factor for many negative health outcomes, including heart failure, coronary artery disease, stroke, kidney disease, peripheral artery disease and hypertensive retinopathy, a disease of the eye. Hypertension is also associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus, which is why the united states preventive services task force has issued a recommendation for diabetic screening in people with high blood pressure. Good control of blood pressure results in a rapid reduction of risk for cardiovascular disease.

Hypertensive heart disease results from changes in both the structure of the heart and blood vessels and their function as the body adapts to abnormally high blood pressure. If you can imagine the heart as a pump operating against a fluid circuit, picture the increased work of that pump if pressure within the circuit is increased. Some of the changes caused by persistent high blood pressure can be partially reversed with treatment using ace inhibitor medications.

Hypertension results in wear and tear of vital organs and vessels as a result of mechanical stress.

Blood vessels have mechanisms to regulate blood flow throughout the body, and when high blood pressure occurs, the blood vessels constrict in initial response. Eventually, the walls of the blood vessels thicken and tissue damage occurs, resulting in hardening of the vessel walls.

Hypertensive disease of the eye is known as hypertensive retinopathy. In the retina of the eye, changes in the blood vessels eventually result in disruption of the integrity of the vessel, and blood or fatty acids may leak onto the delicate retinal tissue. This results in permanent vision change, and it's very preventable.

Complications of stroke can be due to hemorrhage of the blood vessels that supply the brain, or, more frequently, can result from poor blood flow through arteries damaged by persistent high blood pressure. Approximately 85% of strokes are ischemic, or due to poor blood flow. Another manifestation of hypertensive disease that affects the brain is hypertensive encephalopathy. This condition refers to a change in mental status, frequently accompanied by headache and nausea, that results from swelling in the brain caused by alterations in blood flow at very high blood pressure. This condition is associated with malignant hypertension, or hypertensive emergency.

Persistent high blood pressure is one of the leading causes of chronic kidney disease, frequently requiring dialysis. Blood is filtered through the kidneys, and when the small blood vessels of the kidney are damaged by chronic uncontrolled hypertension, the body becomes unable to filter waste. People with kidney damage eventually spend hours hooked to dialysis machines that can remove waste products from their bloodstream, or they may require a kidney transplant. In either case, prevention of the complication is preferable and less complex.

Unfortunately, it is easy to underestimate the cumulative effects of high blood pressure, since the damage is asymptomatic initially. It's important to recognize the inevitable consequences of ignoring persistent high blood pressure. If you have high blood pressure, it's important to realize the silent damage occurring over time if your blood pressure is not adequately treated. If you have a high blood pressure reading, you should repeat measurement on two more occasions. If your blood pressure remains above the level your doctor has suggested, it is essential to follow up. There are many excellent and affordable medications available for treatment of hypertension. Some people require a combination of drugs to maintain control. Whatever the case, the inconvenience of treatment is far exceeded by the benefits to your health over a lifetime.

Doctor I have motion sickness and somewhat eye strain kind of thing. My doctor has been treating it with stugeron. I google so I got something called see sick syndrome. Could you please tell me how to treat it.

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
Google is for guidelines and not for diagnosis and motion sickness is due the feeling you get when the motion you sense with your inner ear is different from the motion you visualize. It is a common condition that occurs in some people who travel by car, train, airplane or boat. Many people suffer from this condition if they ride on a roller coaster or other similar amusement park rides. Motion sickness progresses from a feeling of uneasiness to sweating and/or dizziness. This is usually quickly followed by nausea and/or vomiting. Draminate or dramamine is good for tiis while travelling.

Hi dr, I am having dandruff, itching and hairloss. I have lost hairs on my forehead. Can I use keraglo men ? How long can I use this and should I take this at night after meals or before meals ? Thanks.

BHMS
Homeopath, Faridabad
Hi, yes, you can use them as these are multivitamin with biotin. Biotin is a vitamin b7 which helps in thickening of the thin hair and also regrows hair from a dormant hair follicle, thus helping in hairloss. Take one tablet once daily in the morning after breakfast for 3 months. Also follow the advise and take homoeopathic medicine for the samewhich will help you in hairloss. Management: take diet rich in protein like non-veg, eggs (it's loaded with essential nutrients such as proteins, vitamin b12, iron, zinc and omega 6 fatty acids in large amounts and biotin), different pulses & legumes, sprouts, nuts (sp. Walnuts and almonds); iron-rich food like green vegetables, dates, carrots, prunes, green peas; also oats, shrimp, take flaxseeds, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, green tea, soyabean, fruits, salads, etc. Take low-fat dairy products (they also contain whey and casein, two high-quality protein sources) take proper 6-9 hrs of sound sleep. Give up the habit of smoking and excessive alcohol intake. Avoid junk food and any kind of beverages (tea, coffee, aerated drinks, cold drinks, etc.) avoid canned/ tinned food or food that contains preservatives (eat fresh ones). Avoid use of hard water/ bore water to wash the head rather use already boiled water or drinking water for head wash. Avoid use of harsh hair colour, hair treatment like rebonding, straightening, perming, etc. Avoid vigorous exercises or any supplements provided by the gym! cover your head with scarf or cap while stepping outside. Use rose wood/ any wooden hair comb to brush your hair. Regularly massage head and hair with coconut oil, almond oil (depending upon your scalp type) 1 to 3 times a week. Regular exercising is also one of the important point, but should be done under some good, qualified yoga teacher or instructor for proper guidance; it also releases the stress/ tension in the mind and the body and keeps you fit and young! medication: take homoeopathic medicines - schwabe's wiesbaden 200 & alfalfa tonic twice a day for 3 months. Use schwabe's arnica shampoo and hair growth oil regularly as per the condition of your scalp (minimum 3 times a week). After shampooing, use bakson's arnica hair conditioner as well after every head wash.

Hello doctor. I have fair fall problem from last six months. Day by day decreases my hair. I used so many shampoos. But there is no use. What I have do now.

DRCH, BHMS
Homeopath, Bareilly
Check whether you are suffering from dandruff also because it is also a cause of massive hair fall. If so try to get rid of it first. Eat nutritious diet to provide better nutrition to your hairs so that they may not leave you. Keep your scalp away from strong chemical containing hair products. It all these don't help you take homeopathic medicine.

lybrate-user it seems from your description of symtomes and medicines she is taking, she is suffering from Rheumatoid arthritis, R A disease is autoimune disorder, sometime our body fails to recognise its own protein. It start producing antibody resulting in immune complex production which destroythe own joints .here the normal defence mechanism is hampered. Only Homeopathy can cause immunomodulation. Thus it cure R A. Homeopath should not abruptly stopped the allopathic medicine. After selecting proper remedy and giving it for few days or month. Homeopathy can stimulate defence mechanism and then doctor can gradually tapper the allopathy drugs. One more investigation you can carry out that ANTI C CP ANTIBODY. It is specific test.

Hi, I am 27 old male, Today after I pooped, I am feeling pain in my anal, I am a bit worried about it because this is the first time I am feeling a kind of syndrome for piles or something related to it. From past one month I used to poop after 2 days (in average) and I was feeling that poop size is long and its hard. Kindly suggest me what to do now.

PDDM, MHA, MBBS
General Physician, Nashik
I would suggest you Sitz bath: take hot water in a tub and add betadine solution, cover your anal area and sit for 15-20 minutes twice a day if possible thrice a day. It will reduce bleeding and helpful for healing. Wash the anal area with mild soap, pat dry and apply the Lignocaine jelly after bowel movement and at bedtime. Liquid cremaffin plus 2 tsp twice a day. You should prevent constipation by eating healthy food, which contains fiber. Avoid spicy, fatty, heavy meals and meat. Avoid smoking if you smoke. If your symptoms persist, I would suggest you visit a general surgeon for clinical and physical examination to know about degree of hemorrhoids. Treatment (medical or surgical) can be decided by surgeon. Hope I have answered your query. If you have any queries, I will be happy to help you. Thank you.

Im 21 years old, My body is slim and weight is only about 47 so I would like to become little fatty. Any remedies.

MSc
Dietitian/Nutritionist, Chandigarh
Hi to gain weight you need to combine a balanced eating pattern with regular physical activity. You should be eating at least 6 small meals a day, rather than sticking to 3 square meals. You could divide it as 3 main meals and 3 snacks. You need to be eating every 2-3 hours. Space out snacks during the day so you don't spoil your appetite. Bread, cereal, rice, whole wheat, dalia and pasta: biscuits, and corn-bread are good sources of carbohydrates. Fruits: dried fruits, fruit nectars, and large quantities of fresh fruits vegetables: include, potatoes, peas, corn in your diet. Meat, poultry, fish, dry beans, eggs, and nuts: beef, pork, lamb, poultry, salmon, omelets, nuts, peanut butter, kidney beans, chickpeas will help you gain weight. Include dairy products like milk, yogurt, and cheese: milk, fruited yogurts, hard cheeses, ice cream, puddings, custards, milkshakes. -nuts and seeds make a healthy option for snacks. -roasted channas and peanuts are good -peanut butter on the sandwiches are a great mid-meal choice. -you must know that cereals actually contain some healthy calories. Stay hydrated: drinking plenty of water and other fluids like juices, milk, soups etc, will work in your favour. Do not drink water before a meal and in between the meal as it may make you lose your appetite, thus calorie intake suffers. Sleep: at least 8 hours of sound sleep is a must. Since your body is actually building up muscles, while you rest. Weight gainers have long term side effects.

When I press my wife nipples, they leaks such as milk. My wife is of 42 having two females. We are using ayurveda contraceptive. No lump seen in her breast. Why milk secretion starts after pressing, she is not pregnant.

Diploma in Obstetrics & Gynaecology, MBBS
General Physician, Delhi
At 42 your wife is having hormonal changes and may be some imbalance due to perimenopasal time around menopause, get milk drop tested on slide and get her blood tested for prolactin hormone levels. Some woman for have higher levels of this hormone secreted by higher centre in brain when woman is pregnant but it is higher in non pregnant woman sometimes. Get back here, get an ultrasound of breast done to rule out any underlying nodes.
