White Rice Vs Brown Rice

Diploma in Naturopathy & Yogic Science (DNYS), M.Sc - Dietitics / Nutrition

White Rice Vs Brown Rice

White rice is originally Brown rice which has been thoroughly refined before it is made available in the stores. Rice grain in its natural unpolished state is rich in fiber, thiamine, proteins, magnesium, calcium, and potassium. Whole rice is also rich in fiber which is good for your digestive system and also aids you to manage your weight effectively. There is a raging debate over the type of rice which is good for your health.

The following are some of the pointers that compare white rice to brown rice:

  1. Calorie composition: White rice contains more calories when compared to brown rice. A cup of white rice comprises of 242 calories, while a cup of brown rice comprises of 218 calories. Brown rice is recommended to people who are interested to cut down on their calorie intake as a whole.
  2. Carbohydrates and Fiber composition: Both brown rice and white rice are rich in carbohydrate. A cup of brown rice comprises of 53 grams of carbohydrates and a cup of brown rice comprises of 46 grams of the same. But when it comes to fiber content, brown rice contains more fiber. Fiber is known to boost the blood cholesterol level and aids in weight management; therefore brown rice is more beneficial for help.
  3. Fat and Protein composition: In case of fat and protein composition, both types of rice have a low fat composition while a cup of each type of rice contains about 4.5 grams of protein.
  4. Vitamins and Minerals composition: Brown rice is known to contain more percentage of natural vitamins and minerals when compared to white rice. White rice is thoroughly refined which results in the loss of its natural properties. The manufacturers tend to add vitamins and minerals artificially during the processing of the whole rice grain.
  5. Glycemic Index: According to studies, foods which have a high glycemic index tend to increase your blood sugar level. As per the glycemic index, brown rice has a much lower glycemic index than white rice. The average glycemic index of white rice is about 89 while in case of brown rice it's 50.

It can be said that brown rice is much more nutritious than white rice due to its wholesomeness and higher concentration of nutrients. Brown rice is highly recommended to those people who are health conscious and tend to be careful about their calorie intake.

This method is called" safe period" method and because of failure of method (high failure meaning more chance of pregnancy) it is called unsafe method. Even no condoms there are other methods so meet family planning advisor or gynaecologist and learn. To come to your question in a woman having regular 28 days period safe days are 1-10 and 17-28. Different type of periods need calculations.

Wheat is known as king of cereals. It makes the body stout and keeps the mind calm. This helps in increasing oncentration, reducing insomnia, anxiety, irritation and restlessness, thereby , balancing ones behavior. Wheat contains iron, calcium, iacin, thiamin and fiber. But you will be surprised to know that some people are allergic to wheat. Let us know more about it.

Samiksha started remaining sick when she was about four years old. She was constantly suffering from cough, cold, omiting, diarrhea, gastro, swelling on the body, suddenly crying in the night and always wishing to lye idle, etc. She did not gain any weight and height during this period. She became very weak. Lots of pathology tests were done but the ailment could not be diagnosed. She was then taken to Bombay where a biopsy through endoscopy was done and it was found that the villi of her small intestine was slowly deteriorating. She was suffering from celiac , i.E. Allergy from wheat. She must eat other things than wheat. Her relatives were puzzled and wondered that what she will eat now? How her body will work without eating wheat? In fact, when a person suffers from celiac, his body can not digest Gluten protein
found in the wheat and the villi of small intestines starts getting damaged. Effected person suffers from Diarrhea, gastritis, cough, cold, anemia, and absence of growth in the body.

April 2014 Science News | Elafin, a human protein, plays a key role against the inflammatory reaction typical of celiac disease (gluten intolerance), research has shown. The researchers have also developed a probiotic bacterium able to deliver Elafin in the gut of mice. This innovation paves the way to new strategies to treat gluten intolerance.

Wheat can create three types of problems: Allergy, gluten intolerance, and wheat imbalance.
Allergy from wheat:

Wheat contains Protein, Albumin. Globulin, Gleadin, and Gluten. When I G E (immunoglobulin E) reacts against them in the form of Anti-bodies, people become allergic to wheat. Normal symptoms are : skin diseases (articaria, Eczema, engiodima); Gastritis, nausea, vomiting, asthma and allergic rheumatics.

Gluten intolerance:
Celiac is also known as Gluten antropathy. So far it was known as gluten intolerance. In Celiac disease (CD) ,Gluten protein found in the wheat acts as a villain to the immune system of the body. When Gluten goes into the body through food, it starts damaging the villi of mucosa of small intestine. Function of the villi of small intestine is to extract nutritious elements from the food and inject them into the blood circulation. Food contains vitamins, calcium, protein, carbohydrates, fats and other nutrition. If the villi is damaged, the function of extracting nutrition from the food will seriously be effected and the person will suffer from malnutrition. Celiac is the result of the reaction of IG-A and IG-B antibodies against Gluten. Celiac can be diagnosed early in the children compared to elder persons, because the symptoms in elderly people are not serious. Doctors often take it as instable bowl syndrome (IBS), food allergy,
chronic fattening, anorexia, or malnutrition.

According to University of Maryland, centre for celiac research, Baltimore , one among 133 Americans are suffering from celiac. According to international eating disorder clinic, celiac is one of the main hereditary disease. According to Jaipur JK Lone hospital data, in and around Jaipur around 1500 children are suffering from celiac.

The Gluten Summit and Celiac Disease

Wheat intolerance:
Immune system of the body is not included in it. In fact, so far it is not known that why some people are effected by wheat intolerance. But some specialists are of the opinion that some persons can not digest wheat because in there body enough enzymes are not present.

General Symptoms:
Diarrhea, constipation, stoteria(presence of fat in the stool), Fits, excessive gas in the stomach, stomach ache, weakness, loss of weight, pain in joints and bones, easy fracture in the body, muscle-cramps ,swelling,Peripheral neuropathy , restlessness, depression, apathy in the mouth, skin rashes, spots on the teeth, white spots on the nails, burning in the throat, cold, asthma, allergic rhinitis.

Treatment
There is no specific medicine. As it is caused on account of allergy from wheat, the patient has to stop eating wheat, barley, oats, as they contain gluten. Instead, he has to eat alternative food. This will start curing villi of the damaged parts of body and within 24months celiac is cured and the person becomes normal. To cure the weakness in the body, medicines for vitamins, protein, calcium is given to the patient.

What should NOT be eaten:
Wheat, wheat flour, fine flour, Puri, semolina, barley, oats, samosa, mathari, patties, bread, porridge, millet, chocolate, Jalebi, Burfi, born vita, custard powder, toffee, sauce, curry powder, boost, gulab jamun, protein powder, biscuit, readymade corn flakes.

What to eat:
Rice, chiwda, murmura, arrowroot, sago, maize, jawar, millet, flour of water chestnut, flour of kuttu, flour of potato, milk and milk made products, (butter, ghee, ); fresh meat, fish, eggs, all kinds of pulses, fruits, and vegetables, tea , coffee, honey , rosgulla, home made gram flour things, idli, dosa, sambhar, pop-corn, roasted gram,
rice noodles, petha etc.

Investigation of celiac disease: blood test, TTG, biopsy of small intestine. IGA anti body.

What the specialists say:

Dr. Jagdish Singh, Senior child specialist, JK Lon Hospital, Jaipur: Diet without Gluten is the only remedy. One should not think that without eating wheat, one can not survive. In our country, people living in west Bengal and south India live healthy life without eating wheat, and taking alternative foods available .

Dr. DS Pokharna, Ex-head of Department and Professor, Gastro entrestology Department, SMS Medical college and hospital Jaipur :

Celiac is mostly found in Europe and America, but now in India also people suffering from celiac are increasing. This is a hereditary and auto immune disease. As son as person suffering from celiac eats food containg Gluten, his immune system reacts sharply and villai of small intestine gets effected. To remove weakness in the body, one should take medicine with the advise of a doctor

Dr. Rajiv Nagar, Homeopathy research hospital, Jaipur:
Before 3 years ago, Divya was under our treatment of her symptoms of cold, cough, vomiting and diarrhea. She is now better. Swelling on the body is gone. Her height is now increasing and she is taking wheat since 2 years without any medication. We believe that if the family history of the patient suffering from celiac is studied properly before homeopathic treatment, it is possible to improve. Afterwards, children can start eating wheat. 57 celiac patients are under my care from which 18 have improved and continue care.

Why Does Vaginal Itching Occur?

MD - Obstetrtics & Gynaecology, MBBS
Gynaecologist, Delhi
Why Does Vaginal Itching Occur?

Vaginal itching is a condition which occurs when the vagina comes in contact with irritants or because of a vaginal infection. Menopause may also lead to conditions that trigger itching in the vagina. In some cases, sexually transmitted diseases and skin allergies also lead to vaginal itching. The conditions in itself is not a major cause of concern, however, one should consult a doctor to treat the underlying condition, if any.

Causes-

The main component of vaginal itching is the trigger, as there can be many of them. The various causes of vaginal itching are-

  1. Irritants: Vaginal contact with certain irritants can be the cause behind vaginal itching. Some common substances that irritate the vagina are:

    1. Creams

    2. Ointments

    3. Detergents

    4. Harsh soaps

    5. Topical contraceptives

    6. Scented toiletries

  2. Skin Problems: Certain skin problems such as eczema and psoriasis can result in itching and redness in the genitals. Eczema is a condition which is akin to allergies. Psoriasis is a condition which is characterized by itchy, scaly and red patches on the skin. These symptoms may slowly start spreading to the vagina.

  3. Infections in the Vagina: Infections in the vagina such as bacterial vaginosis and yeast infection can lead to vaginal itching. In addition to the vaginal itching, they can also lead to a foul smelling discharge from the vagina.

  4. Menopause: During menopause, the estrogen levels in the body dip, thus resulting in a dry vagina. A dry vagina can sometimes lead to vaginal itching.

  5. Stress: Excessive stress can lead to vaginal itching as stress affects the immune system in the body. A weakened immune system makes one prone to a number of disorders, vaginal itching being one of them.

  6. Sexually Transmitted Diseases: STDs such as gonorrhea and chlamydia are disorders, symptoms of which include itching in the vagina.

Treatments-

The treatment for vaginal itching begins with a diagnosis of the underlying condition that might be causing it in the first place. The treatment for this disorder is cause specific; hence the underlying condition needs to be identified. Antibiotics and antifungal medications may be administered to treat vaginal itching. For menopause related causes, estrogen creams or tablets are required.

You can also take preventive measures such as:

  1. Avoid using scented soaps.

  2. Use protection during sex.

  3. Wear cotton based underwear.

  4. Eat plenty of yoghurt.

How your life's changing The top of your uterus is about halfway between your pubic bone and your navel, and the round ligaments that support it are thickening and stretching as it grows. You're probably feeling a whole lot better as you settle into pregnancy, too. Less nausea, fewer mood swings, and "glowing" skin contribute to an overall sense of well-being. Soon you'll experience one of the most wonderful moments of pregnancy – feeling your baby move. While some women notice "quickening" as early as 16 weeks, many don't feel their baby move until about 18 weeks or more. (And if this is your first baby, don't be too impatient – you may not be aware of your baby's movements until 20 weeks or so.) The earliest movements may feel like little flutters, gas bubbles, or even like popcorn popping. Over the following weeks they'll grow stronger and you'll be able to feel them much more frequently.
