How to resolve the sinus problem. My nose has suffer from sinus. Please suggest some home made solution. Thanks.

MS - ENT,MBBS
ENT Specialist, Kolkata
Hello lybrate-user best home solution for sinusitis is to take plain water steam inhalation twice a day. For long term relief you have to first served whether the sinuses are infected. If infected or having allergic problems medical treatment will be needed. For intermittent problems steam is good. Get an xray pns to know whether treatment is needed. Hope this helps.

My mother has been diagnosed with spine tuberculosis. She is having persistent pain in back. Is this normal? How long will this pain stay? What is course of treatment and precautions to be taken?

Erasmus Mundus Master in Adapted Physical Activity, MPT, BPTh/BPT
Physiotherapist, Chennai
Spinal tuberculosis is a destructive form of tuberculosis. It accounts for approximately half of all cases of musculoskeletal tuberculosis. Spinal tuberculosis is more common in children and young adults. Characteristically, there is destruction of the intervertebral disk space and the adjacent vertebral bodies, collapse of the spinal elements, and anterior wedging leading to kyphosis and gibbus formation. The thoracic region of vertebral column is most frequently affected. Formation of a ‘cold’ abscess around the lesion is another characteristic feature. The incidence of multi-level noncontiguous vertebral tuberculosis occurs more frequently than previously recognized. Common clinical manifestations include constitutional symptoms, back pain, spinal tenderness, paraplegia, and spinal deformities. The most important factor in SCI rehabilitation programme is early rehabilitation. The positioning in the acute phase, early starting of passive, active-assisted and active exercises will greatly contribute standing of the patient earlier and to mobilize. Standing and mobilization are not recommended in the acute period for these patients. Generally, standing and ambulation are recommended during the subacute period. Patients with spinal tuberculous, bracing with a conforming orthosis (plaster or molded thermoplastic) has been used in combination with antituberculous drugs as initial treatment. Bracing is continued 3 mo after the first radiologic sign of bony fusion[37]. The onset of pain or increase in pain during exercise programs in the early period should be evaluated carefully. Pain aggravating exercises should be avoided and the exercise program should be discontinued if there is a significant increase in pain intensity disturbing the patient following the rehabilitation program. The patient should not be exhausted during exercise and mobilization and should have adequate resting after exercise. High calorie diet regimens should be provided since metabolic requirements are increased during both disease and the rehabilitation period.

How Tobacco Adversely Affects Oral Health

BDS, Diploma in Hospital Administration, Diploma in Pharmacy
Dentist, Delhi
Lung cancer is the first thing that comes to mind for most people when they think of the adverse effects of tobacco on the human body. However, all of the common ways that people use tobacco begin with the mouth, and the damage tobacco does to oral health can range from subtle to severe. Cigars, cigarettes, pipes, snuff, dip and chewing tobacco can all contribute to oral disfigurement, damage, and disease. Family dentists can be instrumental in the education of children and youth in the dangers of tobacco use, and cosmetic dentists can provide treatments for and repair damage already present in adults.

Nicotine stains and other discolorations on teeth and dentures, lips, and tongue are obvious but relatively harmless effects of every kind of tobacco use, as is halitosis, or bad breath. Less objectively obvious but more harmful effects of tobacco use are the loss or diminishing of the senses of taste and smell, smoker's palate (a reaction of the mucosal lining of the palate to elevated temperatures), contribution to the formation and advancement of cavities, sinusitis (which can cause pain similar to that of a toothache), and damage to dental implants. Tobacco use can also reduce the success of dental procedures, and contribute to delays in the healing of oral wounds.

The gums suffer more severe direct damage than the teeth in tobacco users. Periodontitis, a group of diseases that affect the tissues that support the teeth, is more prevalent and more severe among tobacco users than among those that have never used tobacco, and the majority of periodontitis patients that do not respond well to common treatment are users, particularly smokers. Smokers experience significantly greater bone loss; also tooth loss is two to three times higher in smokers than in non-smokers. Users of smokeless tobacco will often experience gingival recession (receding gums), and mucosal lesions.

All tobacco users are at elevated risk of developing oral cancers and pre-cancers. The lungs are considered to be the highest risk site for cancer in smokers, with the larynx and mouth being the next-highest risk site. Oral cancer is the eighth-most common cancer type in men, and can rise as high as the third-most common cancer in some parts of the world.

Nicotine use can suppress the immune and cardiovascular systems, and along with other compounds in tobacco, can lead to chronic inflammation, which can contribute to the risk of cancer. Tobacco use negatively affects the efficacy of drugs and other treatments, and can delay and complicate recovery.

Apart from taking symptomatic treatment I will suggest you to buy a steam inhaler machine of crescent company and take a flow of steam (of plain water only) over the forehead through the inhaler and can repeat the process after eight hours as and when required.

I have bronchitis and problem of washing hands frequently, and I am also short tempered, I used to get angry with my family members.

MBBS, DNB - Pulmonary Medicine, Allergy & Sleep Disorders
Pulmonologist, Noida
Anger harms your body more than anything else. Control your temper. Everytime you will not get angry your body will start feeling better and accustomed to not losing temper. You might be having asthma as well. Get a proper checkup done.

Sleep apnea is mostly associated with asthma and mostly the patient is over weight. Correcting weight and controlling asthma and exercises can decrease the problem to some extent. Proper treatment requires use of ventilators.
