How To Deal With Someone Who Is Suffering From Depression

Depression is an addictive state, which is hard to get rid of. Everybody who suffers from it encounters it in an unexpected way, yet we all agree that it can be a major well-being issue. It makes a person miserable, disappointed, restless or numb for long and tedious timeframes, and is debilitating, particularly when you can't demonstrate your feelings and worries to anybody. It can meddle with your productivity and can become a concern not only in workplaces, but also in social circles.

So here's how to deal with a friend or family member in a depressed state of mind:

  1. Never Say 'You're Too Much': When someone with depression is told "you're too much," particularly by somebody near them, it can send them spiralling into blame and nervousness and bitterness. Being encouraging and empowering is likewise useful.
  2. Try not to Shame People for Being Negative: Dejection changes the world into a scene of pessimism. Discouraged individuals don't just focus on the negatives, but they also disregard the positives.
  3. Do Understand That Depression Doesn't Mean "Trouble": Melancholy is a condition with an assortment of side effects like exhaustion, confused mind state and rest issues. These are all side effects of melancholy. Crabbiness is an exceptionally basic side effect, which once in a while is encountered by many individuals, and can lead to an expanded sensitivity. Normally, it's difficult to be sympathetic with someone who is behaving grumpily. But you need to make a conscious effort to still see the positive in depressed individuals and lead them to hope.
  4. Do Validate: Approval can help manage a depressed state, and can wean a friend or family member out of depression. Remember that someone with dejection is not living in the same universe as you. The laws that oversee your universe don't exist in theirs.

Depressed individuals require your understanding, your empathy, and your affection,  considerably more when they are having a troublesome day, week or month. It is hard, but possible. Discouraged individuals value a positive backing in particular.

Mental Health And Ayurveda Connect

According to an Ayurvedic study of mental health, ‘rajas’, ‘satwa’ and ‘tama’ are essential qualities of one’s mind. ‘Satwa’ is essential for knowledge and reasoning, ‘Rajas’ initiates thoughts, whereas ‘Tama’ renders a soothing effect and serves to control overactive ‘satwa’ and ‘rajas’. However, equilibrium among these three is necessary for a healthy mind. A disruption in this balance results in anxiety, anger and even mental disorder. Environmental toxins, stress and information overload take a toll on one’s brain functioning on a daily basis. Along with exercises and a balanced diet, these few herbs can be used for restoring mental balance, thereby promoting mental wellbeing.

  1. Mulungu Bark- Mulungu calms your nerves, thus improving your mood and sleep. It even enhances brain function, helping to reduce anxiety.

  2. Bacopa- Also known as Brahmi, bacopa boosts memory and cognitive abilities. It also aids in lowering the production of stress hormone ‘cortisol’. It sustains the physical health of the brain cells, protecting the brain against ageing.

  3. Rhodiola Rosea- This medicinal herb consists of two powerful compounds called ‘Salidroside’ and ‘Rosin’. Salidroside is a strong antioxidant while Rosin shields against neurotoxicity (toxicity in the nervous system due to the exposure to artificial or natural toxins) by curbing inflammation of the neural cells. This enhances a better mental performance, reducing anxiety, stress and fatigue.

  4. Ziziphus Jujuba- Day-to-day chores over a long period of time can get extremely tiring and affect your physical as well as mental faculties. Ziziphus Jujuba encourages good sleep at night, thus restoring your mental health.

  5. Passiflora Incarnata (passion flower)- This herb acts as a natural sedative; thereby relieving anxiety, which is a primary reason for interrupted sleep.

  6. Scutellaria lateriflora (skullcap)– The anti-oxidant properties of this plant help deal with and alleviate stress levels, in the process, improving your mood and inducing sound sleep. It also helps treat inflammation of the brain. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a ayurveda and ask a free question.

I'm so depressed because of a love failure. I'm not able to forget him, even though he have done so many brutal things to me. Something is pulling me back to forget him. I lost my studies for a year because of mental depression. And I'm always thinking of ending up my life. I can't even think of a new life. I have been spending my 6 six years in my home itself. Nowhere to go. And nothing to move on. In getting mad of thinking about my love in my home. And sometimes I'm too aggressive. What should I do? Please tell me a way to forget him.

No body is worth dying for, period. Your life is too precious and if that guy had not appreciated it, you dump him. If you had broken up and you are still thinking about him, it only means that you loved this boy very much. I hope you were not the one to break up with him. If it was, then you have played a game and now you have regrets. The clock cannot be turned back again, I suppose. The trouble is that you want to attempted suicide over this love affair. This means that you might have entered into a symbiosis and him leaving has become life-threatening. That itself might be the reason for the breakup. Boys want a relationship where independence is respected and there is no clingy behavior. You have got to look into this aspect of your personality. Are you becoming too dependent on the boy and therefore demanding? This is not a welcome feature for a boy to want to maintain this relationship. You must develop yourself to become independent and responsible. Maintain respectful distance. There are three important developments in an individual that creates an autonomous personality: intimacy, awareness, and spontaneity. Of these, awareness is of great importance: it will help you know yourself internally and to also make you conscious of other people around you. This person is able to meet her needs and that of the other in a balanced manner. You must learn to do this soon. If you resolve the symbiosis, you will do really well. Meet with a counselor and describe your longings, needs and wants, openly. Take your parents along and let them describe your entire life till now and the counselor will get an understanding of your plight. Remove everything that is a reminder of this boy in the meantime and start working on your development. Life is too precious and no one is worth dying for. Demonstrate how you will look after yourself and work on doing that. Learn independence skills and do a personality development course too. By sitting at home you will brood and think of this boy more. So get out and socialize and that is how you are going to meet other boys, and make a new relationships: this time do not hurry and learn lessons from the past.

M 40 years female. From a couple of days I noticed that I am getting angry. I am not feeling happy always irritated and frustrated. On small things im getting annoyed. What can I do. I always stay in sad mood.

MBBS, MD Psychiatry, DNB Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Nagpur
If your symptoms of sad mood, irritability, getting annoyed easily and frustration have been persistent since 15 days or more, you might be experiencing a depressive phase. It is advisable that you consult a psychiatrist in that case. If this has been happening again and again this could be a relapsing type of depression which needs to be addressed seriously. Depression is a treatable disorder just like any other medical illness with medicines and counseling.

Dear Doctor, I have searched on Internet I think I have intertrigo. I feel very shy to talk to my parents about it as...
Don't get misguided by mechanical search on internet. It may not be intertrigo. It may be simple fungal infection generally called ring worm. The itching is usually very disturbing and spreads very fast especially to the parts where there are skin folds. But to your assurance; it is nothing serious to worry about until otherwise proved. It can be successfully treated by homeopathic medicines. Consult with few more details. And advise is not to indulge in local creams.

Hi take ginger tea mixed with 2-3 crushed garlic cloves. Massaging the chest with warm sesame oil mixed with salt helps to loosen the phlegm deposited in the chest, especially, when followed with steam inhalation.

I am 22+ F. I go through a lot of emotional breakdowns. Moods swings are too frequent. I feel unsecured and down too much even though I try too much. I know a thing is bad but still, I repeat it again. I get panic attacks after a week or month which makes me mad. I cry and start to act weird. A friend suggested me I'm going through General Personality disorder. How to really know if I am going through it? Cz I go through suicidal tendencies and tried twice but don’t have so much guts.

The symptoms you are suffering from indicate the possibility of you suffering from some psychological disturbance or some underlying psychiatric condition. You need immediate help as the symptoms are hampering your normal day to day functioning, & the suicidal thoughts may be life threatening. Get yourself evaluated by a Psychiatrist at the earliest. The doctor will assess you, do your detailed mental status evaluation & physical examination, & make the diagnosis of what condition you are actually suffering from. Then he will advice you counseling sessions or prescribe you medicines accordingly. Stay positive. Treatment will definitely help you come out of your present situation.

Hello lybrate-user, Your issue is self esteem. You need to work on self esteem, find the root cause of it depleting in you, ask relevant questions to yourself for e.g. Since when is this happening and what happens when this anxiety takes place. You have observed yourself a lot though but you need an intervention of an expert who can help you overcome this scientifically and with confidentiality. Try to bridge the gap between you and your parents this will be a huge help. Drugs are not the answer most certainly and it will only put you behind. Take care

Dear, You must be able to understand Concentration, attention span, recollection and distraction. If you are able to watch a movie for two hours continuously, if you are able to play a game for an hour, then you do not have any concentration problems. You can't be attentive towards your studies because you are not interested in it. You are able to watch movie and play game because you are interested in it. Human cannot be attentive towards anything for more than 10 minutes. Then you should study in such a way that your attention is continued and make the subjects are interesting to you. Effective learning techniques should help you. Recollection depends on anxiety, stress and other physical and circumstantial factors. Distractions while studying are plentiful. You should be able to overcome distractions or avoid distractions. Please understand the above. Change your study style and attitude accordingly. Please post a private question to me and I will help you with "effective learning" techniques. Avocados, Beetroots, Blueberries, Broccoli. Celery, Coconut Oil, Dark Chocolate etc are good for improving concentration. Take care.

It is natural to feel low and miss the person you have lost. However if it is interfering with your sleep, studies or general well being, or if you feel suicidal, you need to consult a psychiatrist. It is common to feel low, cry, feel like you are alone, or lose your self confidence. Usually time is the best healer. However if things are too difficult to handle you should talk to a psychiatrist or counselor. Confide in someone close to you, who will support you in this difficult time. Don't cut off from friends or family, even if you feel like you want to be alone.

Hi there ~ Getting good sleep is important in maintaining health. There are several things that you can do to promote good sleep, and ultimately Get Better Sleep. Maintain a regular sleep routine Go to bed at the same time. Wake up at the same time. Ideally, your schedule will remain the same (+/- 20 minutes) every night of the week. Avoid naps if possible Naps decrease the ‘Sleep Debt’ that is so necessary for easy sleep onset. Each of us needs a certain amount of sleep per 24-hour period. We need that amount, and we don’t need more than that. When we take naps, it decreases the amount of sleep that we need the next night – which may cause sleep fragmentation and diffulty initiating sleep, and may lead to insomnia. Don’t stay in bed awake for more than 5-10 minutes. If you find your mind racing, or worrying about not being able to sleep during the middle of the night, get out of bed, and sit in a chair in the dark. Do your mind racing in the chair until you are sleepy, then return to bed. No TV or internet during these periods! That will just stimulate you more than desired. If this happens several times during the night, that is OK. Just maintain your regular wake time, and try to avoid naps. Don’t watch TV or read in bed. When you watch TV or read in bed, you associate the bed with wakefulness. The bed is reserved for two things – sleep and hanky panky. Do not drink caffeine inappropriately The effects of caffeine may last for several hours after ingestion. Caffeine can fragment sleep, and cause difficulty initiating sleep. If you drink caffeine, use it only before noon. Remember that soda and tea contain caffeine as well. Avoid inappropriate substances that interfere with sleep Cigarettes, alcohol, and over-the-counter medications may cause fragmented sleep. Exercise regularly Exercise before 2 pm every day. Exercise promotes continuous sleep. Avoid rigorous exercise before bedtime. Rigorous exercise circulates endorphins into the body which may cause difficulty initiating sleep. Have a quiet, comfortable bedroom Set your bedroom thermostat at a comfortable temperature. Generally, a little cooler is better than a little warmer. Turn off the TV and other extraneous noise that may disrupt sleep. Background ‘white noise’ like a fan is OK. If your pets awaken you, keep them outside the bedroom. Your bedroom should be dark. Turn off bright lights. Have a comfortable mattress. If you are a ‘clock watcher’ at night, hide the clock. Have a comfortable pre-bedtime routine A warm bath, shower Meditation, or quiet time If you are still not able to sleep well please set up a consultation and we will try to help.
