Borderline Personality Disorder - Can Emotional Instability Be A Sign Of It?

Borderline Personality Disorder - Can Emotional Instability Be A Sign Of It?

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is such a disorder of personality that causes mood swings, self-esteem issues, impulsive behavior and recurrent self-harm behaviour. It is very difficult to lead a normal life with these varied psychological issues.

People suffering from BPD fear abandonment and loneliness. Yet, they have a tendency of showing mood swings, sudden emotional outburst or anger and hostility. This prevents them from having a long lasting relationship in life. It usually starts affecting the patient's life from early adulthood. It however seems to improve with age. The patient also has distorted self-image. He or she is unclear about what they want from life or what they are in reality. Even minor incidents can trigger intense reactions in people with BPD.

Symptoms of BPD:

  1. Disturbed self-image: People have self-esteem issues, they sometimes love or hate themselves or see themselves as evil. They have unclear goals, views, beliefs and often end up changing their friends, lovers, jobs, sexual identity frequently.
  2. Emotional instability: Intense feelings of rage, sorrow, anger, guilt and emptiness or loneliness are experienced by some sufferers of BPD. Extreme mood swings, lasting for a short span of time, are common in BPD. They may also have issues with their self-image where they cannot place themselves and don't know what they feel about themselves or who they are.
  3. Dysfunctional relationships: It is very difficult to maintain a normal relationship for people with personality disorder. They tend to have quick short-lived relationships and get put off very easily which leads to a lot of heartbreak. Suicidal tendencies and frequent self-harm behaviour like cutting skin using blades/ sharp objects are common. Drugs and alcohol abuse, eating disorders and sexual promiscuity are other forms of self-destructive behaviour commonly encountered in this population.

Causes for BPD:

  1. Usually it has been found by researchers that it occurs to patients who have had a disturbed childhood. Complex and unpleasant happenings in the childhood may leave a deep impact on the patient's personality, which comes back as a disorder in his or her early adulthood. From mental, physical to sexual abuse in the childhood can lead to this condition in adults.
  2. Besides, researchers have discovered recently that this illness has hereditary links. Some genes may be responsible for BPD. Improper functioning of the brain is also another factor. Especially, the portion of brain that controls emotions might not be functioning properly in co-ordination with other parts of it.

Diagnosis for BPD:

There is no particular clinical test that can diagnose BPD. It can be diagnosed by a series of interactive session with the patient by a psychiatrist.

Love and support from family and friends are crucial for patients suffering from this disease. Prolonged counseling sessions, therapies and the effort to break away from the chronic gloomy thoughts will definitely lead one to a better life.

You have to consciously try. Stop saying ye nah I Hota hai. This way you are constantly telling your brain to not to quit smoking. Stop doing negative self talk. I am giving you affirmations that you have to repeat 40 time morning and at night before sleeping in front of the mirror looking into your eyes. 1. I love and accept myself. 2. I am able to stop smoking and I am feeling good. Drink minimum 3 liters of water. Try eating nicotine chewing gum.

In case of OCD after a long time tha medicine which have been used for a long time (3/4 years) has been reduced it's effectiveness. As my case I take nexito20 for my OCD problem since 3 years. But now my symptoms is disturbing me very badly. Should I stop this medicine? Should another medicine take? Otherwise is it a natural process of OCD? Sometimes give relief, sometimes give pain.

Hi, along with medicine you should take help of other alternative therapies like psychotherapy, music and art therapy or yoga meditation etc. Medicine alone helps only 40-50% in Psychiatric disorders. It may give you immediate relief but for cure and prevention or to maintain normalcy you should team it up with alternative therapies.

It can be due to several causes right from vitamin deficiency nutrient deficiency thyroid issues sleep issues walking is no doubt good but it will not cause body pain treat the root cause and not the symptom take a consult for detailed history taking, lab testing and specific advice get educated and never medicated you cannot fix your health without fixing your diet.

Is there any possibility to become fully mad due to OCD? I am a OCD patient since 3 years. Sometimes my symptoms are under controlled. But sometimes its occur. I take nexito20 once in a day.

MBBS, MD - Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Agra
Dear Mr. lybrate-user Mad is a very broad term used negatively when people suffering from illness such as bipolar mood disorder or schizophrenia loose complete control of their thoughts and emotions and it leads to bizarre behavior. Majority of the time patients with OCD are well in aware of their thoughts and emotions, distressed by repetitive thoughts that they know are illogical and engage in repetitive behavior to decrease anxiety from illogical thoughts. Patients with OCD do not usually experience hallucinations or delusions that can lead to bizarre behavior. Hope this helps.

How to monitor withdrawal symptoms of alcohol like vomiting ,loss of appetite? L stopped drinking alcohol. And I am suffering from withdrawal symptoms.

MD - Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Chennai
Alcohol dependence involves intense craving or desire to drink alcohol. People drink for pleasure or rationalize it on external factors like family problems, work tension, etc. They drink continuously, i.e. Almost daily or even weekly once or twice with withdrawal symptoms, tolerance, bodily damage, etc. Due to alcohol they and/ or others are affected significantly. You need to consult a psychiatrist and go for 3 steps of de addiction. 1st is detoxification, when alcohol is stopped and the withdrawal is made smooth with minimal discomfort, 2 nd is maintenance and further deaddiction when the physical problems and psychological state of the individual is maintained and anti-craving drugs started 3 rd rehabilitation, when relapse prevention is the goal, while maintaining deaddiction. All the best.

Eating sweets made of white sugar can create problems as you grow older. To reduce sweet craving, eat more natural sweets like dates, resins, honey and jaggery based items. Eat more natural food like salads and sprouts. It will reduce your sweet craving slowly.
