ratings and reviews)
Spondylitis is an inflammation of the vertebra. It is a form of spondylopathy. In many cases spondylitis involves one or more vertebral joints as well, which itself is called spondyloarthritis. Early signs and symptoms of ankylosing spondylitis may include pain and stiffness in your lower back and hips, especially in the morning and after periods of inactivity. Over time, symptoms may worsen, improve or stop completely at irregular intervals.
The areas most commonly affected are:
• The joint between the base of your spine and your pelvis
• The vertebrae in your lower back
• The places where your tendons and ligaments attach to bones, mainly in your spine, but sometimes along the back of your heel
• The cartilage between your breastbone and ribs
• Your hip and shoulder joints
HOW IS SPONDYLITIS DIAGNOSED?
The health care specialist will perform a physical examination and ask for details of medical history to diagnose the condition. The doctor may suggest X-ray, MRIs and blood tests to further diagnose the cause of the condition.
HOW IS SPONDYLITIS TREATED?
Treatment for Spondylitis aims at relieving pain and stiffness and to prevent spinal deformity. Non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs are prescribed to reduce inflammation due to Spondylitis. Cases that do not respond to NSAIDs may be given tumor necrosis factor (TNF). Physical therapy may provide relief from pain and increase mobility
