SEPSIS IN NEWBORNS
Sepsis In Newborns is a severe blood infection affecting infants, caused by bacteria known as E Coli, Listeria & Group B streptococcus. The herpes simplex virus also is a common cause of this disease which gets transmitted through the newly infected mother. Premature delivery, water breakage before 18 hours of delivery, infection in placenta tissues and amniotic fluid, etc. poses a greater risk of infant getting affected during delivery. Some of the symptoms caused are change in body temperature, seizures, diarrhea, difficulty in breathing, yellowing of skin & eyes, vomiting, etc.
HOW IS SEPSIS IN NEWBORNS DIAGNOSED?
The pediatrician may examine the infant closely and evaluate specific symptoms. Diagnostic tests like blood tests, C-reactive protein and complete blood count are the common diagnostic tests for Sepsis in Newborns. A lumbar puncture may be done to look for bacteria in the spinal fluid. If the baby has breathing problems, then a chest X-ray may be performed. Urine culture is performed for babies who are older than a few days.
HOW IS SEPSIS IN NEWBORNS TREATED?
Babies younger than 4 weeks are given antibiotics through the intravenous line immediately. Mothers who are at a high risk of Sepsis are given antibiotics first itself. If bacteria are found in spinal fluid, then 3 weeks of antibiotics are given.
