Scoliosis is the sideways curvature of the spine that occurs as a growth spurt just before puberty. Medical conditions like cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy may cause Scoliosis. Signs and symptoms of Scoliosis include:
• Uneven shoulders
• One shoulder blade more prominent than other
• Uneven waist
• One hip higher than other
• Rotation of spine in severe cases
HOW IS SCOLIOSIS DIAGNOSED?
If such symptoms are visible, a general physician would do an X-ray to check for the spinal curvature.
HOW IS SCOLIOSIS TREATED?
The orthopedics mostly prescribes the use of braces in case of adolescents which hinders the growth of the curve. The doctor also recommends surgery which involves the process of spinal fusion where vertebrae are permanently joined together.
