The absence of one or both kidneys in a baby is known as Renal Agenesis. This condition can also cause defects or abnormal functioning of other organs and systems such as the digestive, cardiac and respiratory systems. Babies with BRA or both kidneys missing would have limb defects, ears that are set low and widely separated eyes. The symptoms of a single missing kidney might not be visible till later life and would include high blood pressure and developmental defects especially of the inner ear and head.

There is no treatment for Renal Agenesis. Chronic peritoneal dialysis is performed on infants who survive beyond the first few days. The goal is to sustain these infants until they are strong enough to undergo kidney transplant
