PAINFUL ARC SYNDROME
This is a shoulder problem that is most commonly experienced by sports persons, and swimmers in particular. This condition is characterised by pain that may be experienced due to the wear and tear in the shoulder joints and cartilage. This wear and tear may be caused by the repetitive swinging or arc like movement that one indulges in.
HOW IS PAINFUL ARC SYNDROME DIAGNOSED?
Diagnosis is done by an orthopaedic who would do an X-ray and scan of the shoulder area along with checking for signs of inflammation.
HOW IS PAINFUL ARC SYNDROME TREATED?
Sometimes painful arc syndrome or small tears get better on their own with the help of anti-inflammatory painkillers and a change in the activity that may have caused them. A steroid and local anesthetic injection into the shoulder can sometime reduce pain. Physiotherapy may help gain strength and range of motion. Therapeutic injections of corticosteroid and local anaesthetic may be used for. If conservative treatment is not successful your consultant may recommend shoulder surgery.
