Nystagmus is a condition where there is an involuntary movement of either one or both eyes. This is a condition that usually starts in infancy but can happen later in life too. Here the individual may have limited or restricted vision and because of this, the conduit is also known as dancing eyes. Signs of Nystagmus include sudden and involuntary movements of the eyes and issues with vision.
HOW IS NYSTAGMUS DIAGNOSED?
The condition is rather evident and can be diagnosed by an ophthalmology specialist with a number of non-invasive standard eye tests. Caloric reflex test is the most common test that helps with diagnosis of this condition. Orthoptists may also use optokinetic drum, electrooculography to assess the eye movements.
HOW IS NYSTAGMUS TREATED?
The congenital nystagmus is non treatable. Surgical treatment of Congenital Nystagmus is aimed at improving the abnormal head posture, simulating artificial divergence or weakening the horizontal recti muscles. Physical therapy or Occupational therapy is also used to treat nystagmus.
