A meningioma is a brain tumour that develops in the layers of tissue that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. This is called the meninges. Meningiomas are usually benign and grow very slowly although some can be faster growing.
Symptoms may include:
• tiredness (vomiting)
• weakness in an arm or leg
• personality changes, being confused
• seizures (fits).
HOW IS MENINGIOMA DIAGNOSED?
Diagnosis is made by a contrast enhanced CT (computerized tomography) and/or MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan. While MRIs are in some ways superior, the CT can be helpful in determining if the tumor invades the bone, or if it’s becoming hard like bone. A biopsy may sometimes be performed. A surgeon removes part or all of the tumor to determine whether it is benign or malignant.
HOW IS MENINGIOMA TREATED?
Treatment for meningioma depends on the size of the tumour and whether or not its benign. In most cases, regular scans are done but the tumour is not operated. If risks of cancer are there, craniotomy is done followed with radiation and chemotherapy.
DID YOU KNOW?
Meningiomas are most common in people between the ages of 40 and 70. They are more common in women than in men. Among middle-aged patients, there is a marked female bias, with a female: male ratio of almost 3 to 1 in the brain and up to 6 to 1 in the spinal cord. Meningiomas are very rare in children, with pediatric cases accounting for only 1.5 percent of the total.
