Kidney transplant, as the name suggests, is performed in case of a kidney failure. This surgical treatment is required to give an individual a healthy kidney from another person's body. The donor may be a living donor who is willing to donate his/her kidney. The replaced kidney which should be healthy, performs tasks equivalent to the work of two kidneys. One may require a kidney transplant in case he/she is suffering from the end stage renal disease (ESRD), which is a permanent state of kidney failure. There are some conditions that often result in ESRD, such as Polycystic kidney disease, frequent urinary infections, high blood pressure and diabetes, to name a few. If one is experiencing such symptoms, it is advised to seek medical advice from a nephrologist.
At the time of surgery, one is usually administered general anesthesia to put him/her under sleep so that the pain is not felt. The transplanted kidneys, in most cases are placed in the lower abdomen of a person, close to the groin. In the surgery, the vein and artery are connected with the donor kidney to a vein and an artery in the operated person's body so that the blood starts flowing through the new kidney. Then the ureter from the donor kidney is attached to the patient's bladder allowing urine to flow from the new kidney to his/her bladder. The new kidney starts working thereafter and may take a couple of minutes to make urine.
