Infective Endocarditis is a serious problem that leads to the inflammation of inner tissues of the heart. It is actually a kind of endocarditis and occurs when there is harmful infectious agents or pathogens present in the body. Some of the common symptoms here include weight loss, heart murmur, high or persistent fever, weight loss and anaemia amongst others.
HOW IS INFECTIVE ENDOCARDITIS DIAGNOSED?
The diagnosis is based on the medical history and physical signs and symptoms, such as fever. The infection can mimic other illnesses in its early stages. Various tests may be necessary to help make the diagnosis:
• Blood tests. .
• Transesophageal echocardiogram.
• Electrocardiogram (ECG).
• Chest X-ray.
• Computerized tomography (CT) scan or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
HOW IS INFECTIVE ENDOCARDITIS TREATED?
High dose antibiotics are administered intravenously. Antibiotics are typically continued for two to six weeks depending on the characteristics of the infection and the causative microorganisms.
