Hepatic encephalopathy is a disorder that is caused due to faulty functioning of the liver. The real cause of this disorder could be prolonged problem with the liver, but it could result in parts of the brain getting damaged leading to this condition. The symptoms are observed in behavioural changes through slurred speech, memory loss and confusion and so on.
HOW IS HEPATIC ENCEPHALOPATHY DIAGNOSED?
The various tests included for diagnosing the disorder are:
• Complete blood count or hematocrit to check for anaemia
• CT scan of the head or MRI
• Liver function tests
• Prothrombin time
• Serum ammonia level
• Sodium level in the blood
• Potassium level in the blood
• BUN and creatinine to see how the kidneys are working
HOW IS HEPATIC ENCEPHALOPATHY TREATED?
The treatment for Hepatic encephalopathy will be approached based purely on the diagnosis of the individual and the severity of the condition. The objective of the treatment will be to rid the body of some of the toxins which hinder the functioning of the liver. Some antibiotics can also be prescribed to control the situation. A series of steps in controlling the diet and food intake will also help.
