Chromosomal anomalies can give rise to various genetic disorders during pregnancy which affect the foetus. These include Down Syndrome, as well as others like spina bifida which is characterised by defects formed by an open neural tube. These conditions are usually categorised as recessive disorders.
HOW IS GENETIC DISORDERS DURING PREGNANCY DIAGNOSED?
Genetic screening using one of the following methods can diagnose genetic abnormalities during pregnancy:• Ultrasound scan• Alpha-fetoprotein test (AFP) or multiple marker test• Chorionic villus sampling (CVS)• Amniocentesis• Percutaneous umbilical blood sampling
HOW IS GENETIC DISORDERS DURING PREGNANCY TREATED?
It is expected that the Gene therapy could improve treatment of genetic disorders by replacing or restoring the malfunctioned gene.
