Gallstones are small stones, usually made of cholesterol, that form in the gallbladder. In most cases they don't cause any symptoms and don't need to be treated. Gallstones range in size from as small as a grain of sand to as large as a golf ball. Some people develop just one gallstone, while others develop many gallstones at the same time. Some people with gallstones can also develop complications, such as inflammation of the gallbladder (cholecystitis), which can cause:
• persistent pain
• a fever
HOW IS GALLSTONES DIAGNOSED?
Diagnosis of Gallstones is based on the symptoms. Imaging tests like CT scan or MRI create pictures of the gallbladder, which help in identifying stones. The bile duct is also checked for stones by injecting a dye through it. Blood tests are also ordered to eliminate other diseases
HOW IS GALLSTONES TREATED?
Most doctors would suggest the removal of the gallbladder if the gallstones are diagnosed to be of a serious nature. A general surgeon or a laparoscopic specialist surgeon will do the surgical removal of the gallbladder. In this, the surgeon would use probes to pierce the abdominal portion and make a nice cut and suck out the gallbladder. If the doctor feels that internal medicines can dissolve the stones, they may exercise that option as well.
