Gallstones are terms used for defining a solid stone like formation in the gallbladder area of the body. There are basically two kinds of gallstones that are pigment stones and cholesterol stones. HOW IS GALLSTONES DIAGNOSED?
Your general physician may do a complete physical examination along with a few blood tests, an ultrasound, a CT scan, MRI or an endoscopic ultrasound may help in the diagnosis of the condition. An Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) may also be performed which is a process of inserting an endoscope through the mouth to observe the presence of gallstones. The process can be used to remove the gallstones too.
HOW IS GALLSTONES TREATED?
Surgery is not needed unless the symptoms begin to appear. People who have symptoms will need surgery right away or soon after the stone is found. A technique called laparoscopic cholecystectomy is most commonly used. This procedure uses small surgical cuts, which allow for faster recovery. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and a procedure called a sphincterotomy may be done to find or treat gallstones in the common bile duct.
