CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is characterized by numbness or tingling sensation in your palm due to pressure in the median nerve in the wrist. The pressure in the median nerve may be caused by a swelling or anything that narrows down the carpel tunnel. Symptoms are: numbness of tingling sensation in the thumb, index finger, middle finger and half of the ring finger.
HOW IS CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME DIAGNOSED?
A physical examination of the hands, arms, shoulders, and neck can help determine if the patient's complaints are related to daily activities or to an underlying disorder and can rule out other painful conditions that mimic carpal tunnel syndrome. The other tests include X-ray, Electromyogram and Nerve conduction study.
HOW IS CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME TREATED?
Mild symptoms can be treated with home care. Initial treatment involves rest and immobility of wrist, and application of ice. Adjustment of the computer table and chair height may be required for better comfort while working. For causes other than posture, appropriate treatment methods are followed. For severe cases surgical treatment may be required.
