Bruises occur as a result of tearing or rupture of small blood vessels under skin, often due to bumps and falls.Blood leaking this way into tissues under skin will give a blacking blue colour. Healing of bruises takes place within 2-4 weeks associated with different colour changes such as purplish black, reddish blue or yellowish green In some cases, site of the bruise can shift down towards gravity and it has been found out that, the healing of a bruise on leg takes a longer time than that of an arm or face. Bruises are usually accompanied by pain, swelling and soreness. In addition to that, sudden unexplained bruises on skin or increased frequency of getting bruises can be due to drugs like Aspirin or blood thinners, infection which procude toxins in blood ( sepsis), bleeding and disorders which affect clotting like haemophillia, lupus, cirrohsis and carcinomas like leukemia and multiple myeloma. Vitamin B12, vitamin C, K and folic acid deficiencies can also increase the susceptibility to bruises.
HOW IS BRUISING DIAGNOSED?
A general physician may diagnose a bruise through physical examination. In sever bruising accompanied by pain, an X-ray may be required.
HOW IS BRUISING TREATED?
Once a bruise has formed nothing much can be done to treat it as it takes it own time to disappear while the body reabsorbs the blood. Usage of ice packs can help reduce the swelling. Give rest to the affected area to avoid further damage. Medicines may be prescribed for relief from pain.
