Most babies are born with birthmarks that may be permanent or temporary. These are usually purple hued blemishes that can occur on any part of the body or face. Pigmented birthmarks may also be seen on the skin of many babies and it is usually characterised by a brown hue caused by a tight cluster of pigment cells.
HOW IS BIRTHMARKS DIAGNOSED?
Some birthmarks are only colorations of the surface of the skin; others are raised above the surface of the skin or extend into the tissues under the skin. The cause of most birthmarks is unknown. Most birthmarks are not inherited. The dermatologist can perform a physical examination to determine the defects.
HOW IS BIRTHMARKS TREATED?
The treatment of birthmarks depends on its type. Medical treatment can help get rid of certain vascular birthmarks. Also, scalpel surgery, lasers, and rarely radiation can be helpful for both pigmented and vascular birthmarks.
