BICUSPID AORTIC VALVE
Bicuspid Aortic Valve is recognised as a common congenital anomaly of the heart. The aortic valve allows blood to flow from the heart to the aorta. An abnormal aortic valve develops during the early weeks of pregnancy, which is the stage of the baby's heart development. Normal aortic valve has 3 leaflets of equal size or cusps with 3 lines of coaptation, while a congenitally bicuspid aortic valve has only 2 functional leaflets. Symptoms may include: • Child tires easily • Pale skin • Chest pain • Difficulty in breathing • Rapid and irregular heartbeat • Loss of consciousness • Enlarged heart • Heart murmur
HOW IS BICUSPID AORTIC VALVE DIAGNOSED?
Diagnostics may be performed through MRI or Ultrasound of the heart. In case the cardiologist suspects abnormalities in these tests, he may order for chest X-rays, electrocardiogram and angiography to be performed.
HOW IS BICUSPID AORTIC VALVE TREATED?
Surgery is the most effective treatment in case of severe complications. Cardiac catheterization may be performed to open a narrow valve. Medication may be administered to relieve symptoms or prevent complications.
