Ankylosing Spondylitis is a condition that is caused due to arthritis that affects the spinal cord. The symptoms include pain and bone stiffness that may travel down to the hips and the buttocks, an overgrowth of bone on the spine, and pain in the tendons and ligaments. The other symptoms may also include appetite loss, inflammation and pain the eyes, and fatigue.
HOW IS ANKYLOSING SPONDYLITIS DIAGNOSED?
There is no direct test to diagnose AS. The Schober’s test is suggested as a clinical measure of flexibility of the spine during physical examination. The major diagnostic tools are MRI and X-ray of the spine which determine the changes inflammation of the sacroiliac joint, combined with a genetic marker blood test. Doctors may recommend EMG for patients with back pain.
HOW IS ANKYLOSING SPONDYLITIS TREATED?
There is no cure for AS, although treatments and medications can reduce symptoms and pain. In some cases, a diet low that in starches and high in proteins and vegetables is of benefit for patients.
