It is a syndrome which affects the heart. Symptoms are disruption in the rhythm of the heart's lower chambers in addition to the symptoms of long QT syndrome. Also the following can be observed: small lower jaw, low set ears and an abnormal curvature of the fingers called clinodactyly. Widely spaced eyes, short stature, broad nasal root are also the symptoms.
HOW IS ANDERSEN-TAWIL SYNDROME DIAGNOSED?
The diagnosis of this disease takes place in the cardiology department. Genetic testing may be carried out to ascertain the carrier gene and its presence in the patient’s body. Other forms of physical examination, screening, imaging and lab tests may also be carried out for diagnosis of this ailment.
HOW IS ANDERSEN-TAWIL SYNDROME TREATED?
Treatment must be worked out individually for each patient, and may require modification from time to time. Taking potassium improves weakness in some patients. In some families, taking oral potassium reduces heart rhythm problems but makes muscle weakness worse.
