ACHILLES TENDON RUPTURE
Achilles tendon rupture is caused by forceful or sudden motion of ankles that puts a strain on calf muscles, mainly taking place during running, athletic activity, jumping or even quick walking. Symptoms include sudden pain, swelling of ankle, difficulty in standing or walking and inflammation.
HOW IS ACHILLES TENDON RUPTURE DIAGNOSED?
Diagnosing an Achilles Tendon rupture depends on physical examination of the injured lower leg by the orthopaedic. A swelling or tenderness will tell your doctor about the rupture. The doctor might even ask for an MRI or X-ray to know whether the rupture if partial or complete.
HOW IS ACHILLES TENDON RUPTURE TREATED?
The treatment depends on various factors of the patient eg age, level of activity and other risk factors. A surgical treatment is recommended for complete tear and rupture however for the partial tear it could be non-surgical treatment. There are two types of surgeries open surgery and percutaneous surgery. The non-surgical treatment involves rehabilitation and short leg casts. This surgery can take 4-8 weeks to heal.
