Often there is injury to the facial nerve due to some kind of paralysis attack, stroke or other relevant problems. In other cases, the patient may have suffered from issues related to accidents or other problems. In both these cases, surgery of facial nerve may be needed to ease the stiffness or muscle malfunction. The paralysis of the facial nerve is done using uncomplicated parotid procedures. In most of the cases, chances of success are good. Scarring of facial muscles because of nerves not functioning is common but it can scar one for life. Neurologists help to overcome this issue via surgery. After conducting scans and MRI to determine the damaged nerves, facial nerve damage / facial nerve disorders / facial paralysis causes are analysed.
Duration of the surgery usually ranges from 1-2 hours. In some cases, milder complications can arise, especially if the nerve is not readily accessible. The surgery requires inpatient or hospital stay for a few days to ensure that the recovery process is quick and free from risks of infections.
After the surgery, you will note that there is some facial nerve pain, which means that you are getting a sensation in that area. As a result of this, you will be able to move your facial muscles and the stiffness or numbness experienced on one side will be gone. Your facial symmetry will improve and co-ordination of the facial muscles will be much better.
