An orthosis is a device, which supports or replaces missing natural limb function. Fitting of orthosis is generally known as Ankle-foot orthoses (AFOs) that are among the most commonly prescribed lower limb orthoses. They are custom made for each individual to encompass the foot, ankle and leg, finishing just below the knee. Made from high temperature thermoplastic AFOs are supplied to combat a variety of factors, these may include muscle weakness, joint instability and high muscle tone. Fitted with a variety of purposes in mind including controlling alignment, increasing mobility and independence, assisting rehabilitation and/or to reduce pain, AFOs are also provided with the intention of preventing deformity occurring. Depending on a child's needs they may be hinged (made to bend at the ankle) or solid (no movement at the ankle) and orthotic inserts on either one or both legs. Measurements will be taken and in some cases, it will be necessary to cast the affected area of the body with plaster or another malleable material. At your second appointment you will be able to try out the new orthosis. If you are satisfied with the fit and your orthopedic surgeon agrees, the process is complete. If modifications are needed, then additional visits will be necessary. Some orthotic devices are available in more standard models and sizes, which makes the fitting process quicker and provide custom orthotics. Other devices require very precise fitting, and predictably, these will take longer. It is normal to feel the orthotics slightly more or different in one foot than the other for the first few weeks.
