From the limited info provided, there seems to be some infection spreading from your leg to your thigh. This is indeed unfortunate. If that is indeed the case, it is quite serious and needs emergency treatment. Whether to "remove" the leg (Surgical amputation) and at what level and when exactly to do it, depends on the treating doctor to decide, based on several factors. However, I must inform you that surgical amputation of a leg is a major surgery as it is irreversible and to be honest, decreases your life span considerably. Hence, a decision needs to be taken after seriously weighing all the options. Ideally, this decision should be taken by a team comprising of your treating physician, surgeon, vascular team, anesthesiologist, rehabilitation team, your family, etc.

I had a slip inside the house and my left toe was fractured along with sprain in the whole left feet and heel just one and half years back. I am treated by ortho doctor at Jayanagar ortho. Hospital with plaster for five weeks. After removing the plaster, left feet remained black with swelling and for nearly one year same thing continued. I am having diabetic and hypertension and taking tablets regularly. I was in a teaching profession and used stand for long hours and as such I developed arthritis and added to it the diabetes and bp have caused numbness in my feet, but it is more in my left leg foot after the fracture and post treatment. Still I am having pain in my heel and find paining after standing for long, but subside while walking. The ortho doctor after treatment took xray and told me the fracture is cleared completely. Pl advice me what is the remedy for my ortho problems.

I don't understand why a plaster (I assume Plaster of Paris. POP) was applied for a fracture of the toe. Usually, a closed (meaning the skin hasn't been breached) fracture of the toe, if undisplaced, is treated by a simple "Buddy strapping" Here, we just apply an adhesive plaster (NOT Plaster of Paris) to the affected toe along with its neighbour. We usually DON'T apply POP. I think the doctor applied POP for the sprain, to give it some rest. Nonetheless, I now recommend you meet a Diabetic Foot Surgeon immediately.

I am sorry to learn of your cousin's miscarriage. APLA stands for Anti Phospholipid Antibodies. They are seen in certain Auto immune diseases such as APLA syndrome & SLE. Medical science is still not clear about why it occurs in only some individuals. They develop antibodies without any obvious reason and it causes clotting of blood in the blood vessels. Miscarriage is a known feature of APLA syndrome. Treatment is difficult, but in some, Asprin or Heparin may help. You should consult a Rheumatologist. Wishing you all the best!

Sweating while exercising does NOT cause hair loss by itself. Whether working out in a gym is good or bad depends on the type & duration of exercises done.

If both your parents are short, then I guess you have inherited your short stature from them and there isn't much you can do. But if they are of average height, then go & consult an Endocrinologist to see whether you have any hormonal issues.

Can Diabetics Undertake Ramadan Fasting?

MD - Diabetology, Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons (MRCS), MBBS

Can Diabetics Undertake Ramadan Fasting?

General guidelines for diabetics to be followed during Ramadan:

1) If you are a type 1 diabetic, don't fast.

2) If you are a type 2 diabetic, you may fast, but only after consulting your doctor.

3) Do not fast if you are a child or pregnant or have complications or have frequent episodes of hypoglycemia.

4) The 3 biggest dangers of prolonged fasting are dehydration, hypoglycemia and a condition known as Diabetic Keto Acidosis (DKA). The commonest symptoms of these life threatening conditions are intense thirst, intense hunger, tremors of fingers, palpitations, headache, giddiness and sweating. If you develop any of these symptoms associated with these conditions, break your fast immediately and rush to doctor.

Deciding to treat diabetes based on glucometer readings alone is not right. You should do a proper FBS, 2 hour PPBS and HbA1c in a lab and only then, such a decision should be taken.

This is quite a common problem that the elderly have. Usually, it is because of age- related inefficiency of the veins of the feet, ankle & legs. Assuming your father doesn't have any serious medical ailments, I suggest you urge him to keep his legs elevated when he has to sit for long periods. Also, tell him to twirl his toes & rotate his ankles more often (if it isn't painful) when seated.

Are long Distance Athletes like marathon & 10,000 meter professional athletes in India prone to getting diabetes since the running done is the most. There is no such gym workout that is done by such kind of athletes. Unlike a Sprint runner who does only 100m, 200m or long jump or hurdles, a long distance is mostly running or a 3000 steplechase. Also, diabetes is on the insulin level in the body. I'm a middle distance runner. Hence, i'm asking this question.

In a word, YES. Long distance runners can also develop diabetes, though the chances are much lesser than those in non-athletes. Diabetes doesn't mean the person has low Insulin alone. It means both that the person's body isn't producing enough Insulin for his/her requirements (known as Insulin deficiency) AND also that the Insulin that is produced is NOT able to exert its influence efficiently (a phenomenon known as Insulin Resistance). Thus, diabetes means both Insulin deficiency PLUS Insulin resistance and also a host of other metabolic derangements. I don't want to bore you any further...

No. FBS of 99 mg% doesn't fall under diabetic range. But to be very sure, do your PPBS and HbA1c too.

ALL fruits and vegetables contain glucose. Hence, you cannot find a fruit that will not increase your blood sugar. However, take fruits in moderation, if you are a diabetic. By the way, what eaxctly are your 2 hour PPBS and HbA1c levels?

Pain behind the heel is usually due to Achille's Tendinitis (inflammation of the Achille's tendon). It can easily be treated with rest, the right footwear and simple pain relieving medicines. I guess you didn't sustain any injury to the region.

Yes, there are oral steroids that can be given to outpatients. Also, she can be put on Insulin at home. Hospital admission for starting steroids & Insulin alone, is unnecessary.

Strictly speaking, diabetic should avoid alcohol completely. But if you insist on taking it, ensure that your blood sugars and all other parameters are normal. Then, you may take one 30 ml drink of hard liquor (usually containing around 45% alcohol) per day. However, if you are on Insulin, avoid alcohol.
