Teething is the process by which an infant's first teeth sequentially appear by emerging through the gums, typically arriving in pairs. The soreness and swelling of the gums before a tooth comes through is the cause for the pain and fussiness a baby experiences during this change. Classic signs and symptoms of teething include drooling, chewing on solid objects, irritability or crankiness and sore or tender gums.
HOW IS PAINFUL TEETHING DIAGNOSED?
Painful teething is diagnosed by the symptoms of the baby. The baby may feel irritated or fussy. The baby may also develop a temperature or diarrhea just before a tooth breaks through. The child will be unsettled and cranky. He will put things and hands in his mouth often as he will feel the urge to do so.
HOW IS PAINFUL TEETHING TREATED?
No treatment is required as it is a natural process. One can provide relief by gently rubbing the thumbs or give a teething toy for the infant to chew on. In rare cases, the podiatrist may prescribe some medication to ease the pain.
DID YOU KNOW?
It is important to keep the gums clean so that the teething can be less painful and free of infections.
