My baby is four months old. She always put her fingers into her mouth and starts sucking it. When she passes motion I can notice many hairs in it. I fear that it can cause infection or can disfigure her face especially her teeth. Can I give her soother or how can I stop her habit.

Finger sucking is normal and does not need any intervention. Please see whether the hairs are actually in the fecal matter.

Hi, my daughter is 21 months old. Since last one month or so she doesn't eat anything at all. We have tried everything from khichdi/dalia to paratha to tikki to smileys etc but it doesn't work. At times she just eats a bite or two, that too after a lot of effort. Could you please suggest how can we increase her appetite - any syrup etc. Thanks.

Make sure she is not anemic. Treat her for worms. Avoid food forcing. Spend some time with her. You are not just giving food. You are giving your love also.

Vomiting is common and can be considered normal in young infants up to six months. You have not mentioned the birth weight. If the weight gain is normal there is no need to worry. Keep track of his weight.

Importance of Yoga for Children

Diploma in Child Health (DCH)
Pediatrician, Kannur

Many parents complain about bad behavior of their children. It is extremely unfortunate that parents are not giving sufficient attention to mental health of children. When we say 'health is wealth' and 'prevention is better than cure' why do we think only about physical health? mental health is more important than physical health. That is why our wise ancestors said that the mind is responsible for one's happiness or sorrow depending on how it is handled. We should integrate yoga into our lives if we want to be happy and teach yoga to our children if we want them to behave well.

Caring for Child's Mental Health
It is not enough to merely focus on the physical health of children. Parents should take primary responsibility for safeguarding the mental health of children, preventing them from going astray and making them good human beings and responsible citizens. Thus we can create a healthy society

For the information of all parents: It is not wise to go on giving medicines to children without ensuring they get healthy food.
