TETRALOGY OF FALLOT
Tetralogy of Fallot is a rare congenital heart condition that is characterized by four heart defects that defect the structure of the heart and cause poor flow of oxygen out of the heart and the rest of the body. Children and babies with this condition have blue tinged skin as their blood doesn't carry enough oxygen. Apart from that, these children have shortness of breath especially during feeding and when doing any physical activity.
HOW IS TETRALOGY OF FALLOT DIAGNOSED?
Doctor might suspect tetralogy of Fallot if baby has blue-tinged skin or if a heart murmur — an abnormal whooshing sound caused by turbulent blood flow — is heard in baby's chest. Cardiologist will conduct a physical examination and use several tests to confirm the diagnosis.Tests may include Echocardiography, Electrocardiogram, Chest X-ray, Oxygen level measurement (pulse oximetry) and Cardiac catheterization.
HOW IS TETRALOGY OF FALLOT TREATED?
Surgery is the only effective treatment for tetralogy of Fallot. Surgical options include intracardiac repair or a temporary procedure that uses a shunt.
DID YOU KNOW?
Tetralogy of Fallot occurs during fetal growth, when the baby's heart is developing. While factors such as poor maternal nutrition, viral illness or genetic disorders increase the risk of this condition, in most cases the cause is unknown.
