Shaken Baby Syndrome is a serious brain injury caused by forcefully shaking a baby. Shaken Baby Syndrome, also known as Abusive Head Trauma, Shaken Impact Syndrome, and Whiplash Shake Syndrome, Shaken Baby Syndrome is a form of child abuse that causes severe brain damage. Since babies have soft brains and weak neck muscles, shaking a baby can cause their brain to repeatedly hit the inside of the skull. Some of the common signs of Shaken Baby Syndrome include body tremors, trouble breathing, poor eating, discolored skin, vomiting, seizures, coma, and paralysis, among others.
HOW IS SHAKEN BABY SYNDROME DIAGNOSED?
The pediatrics will initially do a physical examination of the baby and then recommend X-rays, MRI and CT scan. In various cases lumbar puncture & blood tests are suggested for detecting the symptoms of any other medical condition.
HOW IS SHAKEN BABY SYNDROME TREATED?
The usual treatment here includes life sustaining measures for the hurt child along with surgery and hospitalisation when required. These children require support and care from family to recover faster. Breathing support is also needed.
