Chest pain may be caused by poor blood flow to the heart leading to angina or by a sudden blockage in the coronary arteries resulting in a heart attack. Other causes of chest pain include indigestion, reflux, muscle strain, inflammation in the rib joints near the breastbone and herpes zoster or shingles. Depending on its cause, chest pain may be:

Your cardiology professional would run a series of tests to check the cause of this problem. It includes CT scan, ECG or EKG, blood tests, BMI test, etc. Heart rhythms would be checked while making you do some exercises.

Treatment largely depends on the diagnosis of the pain. If the pain is because of obesity and excess stress on the heart, the doctor might ask you to change your exercise regime. For athletes, preventive devices are given along with heart rate monitoring devices.
