FAMILIAL ADENOMATOUS POLYPOSIS
Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) is a rare, inherited condition that causes extra tissue (polyps) to form in your large intestine (colon) and rectum. Colonic or large bowel polyps are the most common, increasing in frequency with age. Colonic polyps are mostly seen in numbers of more than ten after the age of 60.
HOW IS FAMILIAL ADENOMATOUS POLYPOSIS DIAGNOSED?
Diagnosis of the same can be done around birth or prior to birth with genetic testings. In the later stages, stool examination, screening like ultrasound and other similar procedures are used for checking these polyps growth.
HOW IS FAMILIAL ADENOMATOUS POLYPOSIS TREATED?
Treatment is decided depending on if or not the rectum is involved in the polyps. Surgical procedures are the best way to get rid of the same. There are some medications give to flush these out naturally if the polyps are small in size. Beyond this, Prophylactic colectomy is the most common treatment for this problem.
