In dentistry terms, dental calculus is a form of hardened plaque that is formed due to minerals in saliva. The calculus is associated with other dental conditions such as bad breath, receding gums and inflamed gingiva. The plaque that may form the calculus can still be removed with vigorous brushing and flossing however once formed, the calculus is pretty hard to remove and will require dental tools.

Calculus of teeth can be avoided by proper brushing. Also, calculus build-up can be removed with ultrasonic tools or dental hand instruments such as a periodontal scaler
