Cysticercosis is a tissue infection caused by the young form of the pork tapeworm. People may have little or no symptoms for years. In some cases, particularly in Asia, solid lumps of between one and two centimeters may develop under the skin. After months or years, these lumps can become painful and swollen and then resolve. A specific form called neurocysticercosis which affects the brain can give neurological symptoms.

Diagnosis of Cysticercosis is done through stool tests. But this test may prove ineffective in some individuals. General physicians may order for biopsy of the affected tissue for diagnosing the disease. X-rays and CT scans help confirm the diagnosis. Serological tests may also be performed
HOW IS CYSTICERCOSIS TREATED?
Treatment depends on individual’s symptoms. Common treatment methods are administering anthelmintic agents, corticosteroids, anticonvulsant medication, and surgery.
