Cancer commonly brings a great deal of pain due to the presence of a tumour which spreads to the bones and other parts of the body, and the strain of the treatment. Also, many patients also suffer from diseases like arthritis, migraines and chronic back pain. The pain is also usually associated with radiation therapy and chemotherapy.
HOW IS CANCER PAIN DIAGNOSED?
Oncologists may perform physical examination of the area affected by cancer pain to determine the cause. Cancer pain due to treatment may be evaluated for the specific drug that causes pain or burning.
HOW IS CANCER PAIN TREATED?
Treatment of cancer pain may be done through over the counter pain killers. Specialized treatments like nerve blocks may be used to prevent the pain from travelling through the nerve pathway. Alternative therapies like acupressure, physical therapy or acupuncture may be done for pain relief.
DID YOU KNOW?
About 75% of the pain is caused by the illness itself; most of the remainder is caused by the diagnostic procedures and treatment.
