The general physician who will suspect gastritis according to patient's history will refer the patient to a gastroenterologist who will do an upper endoscopy. This procedure includes insertion of a thin tube with a tiny camera attached to the end, through the mouth to the stomach. This test will help to find out the presence of inflammation in the lining of the stomach and also to obtain a sample of tissue if required.
