Diarrhoea that lasts less than two weeks is termed as acute diarrhoea. Consistency of the stools is the benchmark for classifying the condition as diarrhoea; diarrhoeal stools are often watery and loose. Other symptoms associated with acute diarrhoea are fever, abdominal cramps, vomiting, nausea, urgency and fatigue. The most prominent cause of acute, watery diarrhoea is viral gastroenteritis. In children, rotavirus, and norovirus in adults are the main causes of acute diarrhoea.
HOW IS ACUTE DIARRHEA DIAGNOSED?
Evaluation of the food pattern and physical check up of the patient is carried out. Other tests like Flexible sigmoidoscopy with biopsy, Stool culture for enteric pathogens, Faecal leukocyte determination, Stool examination for ova and parasites, also should be carried out.
HOW IS ACUTE DIARRHEA TREATED?
In most cases it can be resolved within few days without treatment. There are no tests required for Diarrhea. However some self care would help in the treatment eg having adequate fluids, taking care of diet, washing hands, antibiotics prescribed by doctor, etc.
