Tooth fractures can range from minor (involving chipping of the outer tooth layers called enamel and dentin) to severe (involving vertical, diagonal, or horizontal fractures of the tooth and/or root). The tooth may be painful while eating certain foods or while biting in a specific way. One may not feel a constant ache, like it would on cavity or abscess, but the tooth may be more sensitive to cold temperatures.
HOW IS FRACTURED TOOTH DIAGNOSED?
Different tests will be performed as per dentistry to identify if the cause of toothache is a tooth fracture. X-rays are most common diagnostic tools in this case. These x rays help in also identifying the location of the fracture and the extent of damage to the tooth to devise a proper treatment plan.
HOW IS FRACTURED TOOTH TREATED?
In most cases, treatment includes getting rid of the fractured tooth or doing a root canal if the injury is very serious. In case the injury is very minor then there is actually no surgery needed. A toothpaste along with ointments are given for application to add strength to the teeth.
DID YOU KNOW?
A fractured tooth is at a higher risk to fall off or chip. So exercise caution when eating from that side of the mouth.
