There are many reasons why women might seek Medical Termination of Pregnancy. The major reason for MTP is detection of fetal abnormality, or critical health issues of the mother. MTP can be required to be carried out anytime in mid-trimester. The procedure to terminate the pregnancy will depend on how many weeks a woman is pregnant. If the woman is still in the first trimester, then one has the option of ending the pregnancy by taking medicine or going through a surgical procedure. Before doing both, your gynaecologist is likely to ask for a sonogram.
In case, the doctor prescribes the pill based abortion, then you will be given a combination dose of Mifepristone and Misoprostol, which leads to contraction and bleeding and expulsion of the embryo within 72 hours of consuming the same. In case of surgical or other methods like Manual Vaccum Aspiration or Aspiration, the process will take about 30-40 minutes and the patient may be advised to take rest through out the day.
If the women is in the second trimester, only surgical abortions work. These include Dilation and Curettage or Dilation and Evacuation, based on whether the pregnancy is 16 weeks old or beyond. Any abortion that takes place in the third trimester, where the pregnancy is considered unviable, has to be done through Dilation and Extraction method.
However, post abortion rest is highly recommended. Also, the mothers go through emotional turmoil and may need psychological counselling. If you are trying on starting a family then you should wait at least 4-6 weeks after the abortion before trying again.
