Histoplasmosis is an infection caused by breathing in spores of a fungus often found in bird and bat droppings. Sometimes the infection spreads, causing the liver, spleen and lymph nodes to enlarge and damaging other organs. The symptoms may include:
• Fever and chills
• Cough and chest pain that gets worse when breathing in
• Joint pain
• Mouth sores
• Red skin bumps, most often on the lower legs
HOW IS HISTOPLASMOSIS DIAGNOSED?
The General Physician may not find many direct ways to diagnose the condition. However, culture test of the fungus and blood tests to check on the Histoplasma and its response to anti bodies and so on, can give the doctor the required reports to carry on with the treatment.
HOW IS HISTOPLASMOSIS TREATED?
Mild cases of Histoplasmosis do not require treatment. Severe cases may require immediate anti-fungal treatment. Some medications are given orally, while some are administered intravenously.
