My father was died by attempting suicide so I am in depression so please help me what to do.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
My father was died by attempting suicide so I am in depression so please help me what to do.
Your father died due to some problem which he felt he could not handle. All problems can be solved but we may not have as yet found a solution at that given time. Now this is a lesson for you that if you find yourself in a situation where you feel the issues cannot be solved, that is only your perception. If you look for it and if you collaborate with others, a solution can be found. This lesson is very important to learn and use always in your life. Your depression could be anger related with your father for taken his life and leaving you to fend for yourself. You must meet with a counselor and talk about your feelings and you will surely get out of this depression. In the meantime please do the following sincerely because you could resolve the problem better with good cooperation: Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber, nuts, avocado, exercise regularly, eat dark chocolate, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. I suggest you do the opposite of what this depression makes you feel like doing (actually, not doing): you will need to fight this condition. You must become active; stay upright during the daylight time; meet people; never sleep during the day, wake up by 6 am every day, play some active games, especially contact games, do physical exercises, talk to people and join some social clubs, attend Yoga classes etc. Watch sitcoms on TV or comedies and cheer yourself up. Go for excursions in groups, for outings, camps, conferences, and religious conventions. Get a pet dog and spend time training it, exercising it and relating to it. Expose yourself to some sunlight every day, at least, 30 minutes but not in the scorching heat. Whatever happens, please incorporate these three important adaptations in your life: always be responsible, be respectful, and be functional. If you did these three, lots of things will go well in life. Please pray and have faith in God to alleviate your sufferings. Don’t wait for others to help. Use your own motivation, which might be at its lowest, but persevere and win this battle. Above all to be really happy, you need to live in love and for love. Learn all about emotions and how to handle them and that will get you out of the depression rather easily and quickly. A counselor is there only to facilitate you, all the hard word must come from you, and your cooperation with that person is very critical for your success. Be positive every day and learn to be contented with what you have. Do some left brain exercises: it is the happy brain. Here are a few suggestions: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. Whatever happens please cooperate with the therapy and do not discontinue until the condition is completely resolved.

I have memory related problem for 2 years. I have started mentat tablet from Himalayas. Is it is good for memory.

BHMS
Homeopath, Faridabad
Hi, can't tell you about himalayas tablets, but can give you surity for homoeopathic medicines which will improve your memory along with diet. Hello, there are few food items which helps you in boosting up your memory power, increases focus & concentration, so try to take more of these: 1. Choline: good sources of choline include liver, milk, eggs and peanuts. 2. Vitamin b: b vitamins are not synthesized in the body, and thus need to be obtained from food. B-complex vitamins are water-soluble vitamins, which means that they are not stored within the body. In consequence, the b vitamins need ongoing replenishment. Vitamin b1 (thiamine) rich sources include unrefined grain products, ready-to-eat cereals, meat (especially pork), dairy products, peanuts, legumes, fruits and eggs. Foods that contain high concentrations of vitamin b3 (niacin) in the free form include beans and organ meat, as well as enriched grain and cereal products. While niacin is present in corn and other grains, the bioavailability of the nutrient is much less than it is in protein-rich sources. The role of vitamin b9 (folic acid) during pregnancy is vital to normal development of the nervous system in the fetus. Good sources of folate include liver, ready-to-eat breakfast cereals, beans, asparagus, spinach, broccoli, and orange juice. Animal protein products are a good source of vitamin b12 (cobalamine), particularly organ meats such as kidney or liver. Other good sources are fish, eggs, and dairy products. 3. Vitamin a: the foods highest in vitamin a are any pigmented fruits and vegetables and leafy green vegetables. 4. Zinc: zinc is a very important part of the brain as well; many regions of the brain, such as the cerebellum, and hippocampus have neurons that contain this nutrient. Zinc is needed to maintain normal vitamin a levels in blood plasma. Sources of zinc are meats, certain seafood, whole grains, baked beans, oatmeal, milk (low-fat), cashewnut, almonds, kidney-beans, cheese, peas, spinach, sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds, flaxseeds. Medication: take homoeopathic medicine for increasing memory - anacardium 200/ once daily.

Is bright light therapy useful in non seasonal depression also. If yes how can be this done at home.

MBBS, MD Psychiatry, DNB Psychiatry

Is bright light therapy useful in non seasonal depression also. If yes how can be this done at home.
Bright light therapy is shown to be effective only I seasonal affective disorders particularly in mediterranean countries where sunlight is scarce or seen very less often. Also it remains only a adjunctive therapy in addition to medications and counseling. I doubt about its use in other types of depression particularly in indian subcontinent.

Dear Doctor, I would like to know how exactly an anti depressant works? Primarily if the course duration for the medication is for 6 months and after that it needs to be tapered down, I would like to know whether the medicine does the job to permanently restore the chemical imbalance in the brain or it just bring it to normal balance and the person can be subject to another episode during a stressful situation after the course of the medicine. I am asking this as this is a vital information that I am not able to find answers to as I am dealing with a depression affected patient at home and would like to get more education in the background of this treatment and how long is the effect of antidepressants going to stay with the patient. Request a genuine help. Thanks and regards.

I am 33 years old and from last couple of months I am going through depression what should I do?

D.P.M(psychiatry) [Diploma in Psychological medicine] , MBBS

I am 33 years old and from last couple of months I am going through depression what should I do?
Hello, it is best to consult a psychiatrist early in depression to prevent impairment in your personal and professional life. You could choose either medicines or counselling depending upon severity of illness. In the meanwhile, you can:- 1) aerobic exercise for 30 mins daily like walking or running 2) cultivate some hobby that gives you pleasure. 3) interact more with friends and family members. 4) music helps in lifting mood. 5) do yoga, pranayama or meditation, whatever comes easy to you. If these things don't help much, don't shy in seeing a psychiatrist. Take care.

Hi , some people have a tendency to react to minor issues with explosive anger. They often feel guilty after the anger episode is over. This is classified in psychiatry under impulse control disorder and is termed" intermittent explosive disorder. A combination of both, medicines and anger management techniques is used to deal with the same. Consult privately for more help. Take care.

How to leave a cigarette?

Advanced Skills in Counselling, BSIC, Advanced Trainee of Transactional Analysis, DCS, Hypnotherapist
Psychologist,
If you want to stop smoking, you could try these: 1. Set a date for yourself to stop smoking. Or you can slowly reduce everyday or weekly. 2. Tell everyone that you are stopping smoking so that they can support you. 3. Remove ash trays, lighters and cigarettes from your room, car, office etc. 3. Take support of support groups like nicotine anonymous. 4. Use nicotine chewing gum or patch in the transition phase. 5. Be aware of your triggers and examine them. Counselling helps in this and explore stressful situations when you tend to smoke more. You would be able to manage the stress without having to depend on the cigarettes and finding your own strengths and resources within yourself and the environment to cope with stressful situations. 6. Congratulate yourself when you are able to successfully manage without smoking. 7. Expect days when you slip and smoke. Don't be hard on yourself. Examine your reasons for slipping and learn from them. Most people who quit successfully have tried it at least 3-4 times. If you have any questions, please click on private chat.

Is smoking harmful?

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist,
There are too many harmful effects because of smoking. But here are a few to ruminate up on with the intention of either making you stop or to never start it in the first place. It has more than 4000 chemical substances most of which are harmful. It affects your stamina, breathing, forms skin wrinkles. Bad for your heart, bad for bad cholesterol, it can lead to strokes, dental problems, eye problems, cancer, brain cell death, vascular problems, throat problems, voice difficulties, etc. The list is quite endless. It is so bad that there is an international battle to dissuade smoking. It becomes difficult to stop if you are already in it. Better not to start, if you are not in it.

PhD (Psychology), MSc Psychology, MS
Psychologist,
Dear, you must be able to understand concentration, attention span, recollection and distraction. If you are able to watch a movie for two hours continuously, if you are able to play a game for an hour, then you do not have any concentration problems. You can't be attentive towards your studies because you are not interested in it. You are able to watch movie and play game because you are interested in it. Human cannot be attentive towards anything for more than 10 minutes. Then you should study in such a way that your attention is continued and make the subjects are interesting to you. Effective learning techniques should help you. Recollection depends on anxiety, stress and other physical and circumstantial factors. Distractions while studying are plentiful. You should be able to overcome distractions or avoid distractions. Please understand the above. Change your study style and attitude accordingly. Hi i Am married for 12 yrs and want to be loyal to my wife. We don't yet have children and don't have a diagnosis of why. But my problem is more psychiatric now. My wife and me used to have a very loving relationship for couple of years. But slowly we had several arguments over silly things over the years and she kept blowing things out of proportion. I had an affair. I ended that and my wife though upset, also understood that situations drove me to it and her mistake also there for fighting immaturely over silly things. But my best friend who was supportive to us in the troubled times is now having an emotional affair with my wife. I don't think they had a sexual relationship, but she is emotionally attached to him and her text messages to him say she loves him. After all this; my emotions are in a turmoil and I tend to seek love outside and now talk to a couple of women intimately. I fear am turning into a love addict or something. My sexual relationship with my wife has been just once in a month or even less for nearly a year now. I know it's not a physical problem that I have and purely psychological. I have not confronted her or anything. But she knows I suspect her of having a relationship with him, but still continues to text him and such behind my back. At times she also acts loving with me. Our relationship has become like actors with no idea of what is true or not. Am 40 and she is 35. We are also running out of time to have a child. But in all this state I can't seem to want a child and she too refuses treatment. It's a stalemate now and I don't know how to solve the problems and which to tackle first. I am aware that a relationship has to be built on trust and such, but don't know how to break out of this vicious cycle and my seeming addiction of running after women.

Dear, you must be able to distinguish between mental disease and mental disorder. Your problem is a mental disorder. Not a mental disease. These relationship problems are usually treated with a combination of medicines and other means like awareness, meditation, psychotherapy techniques, life style changes etc. I think two or three counseling sessions and psycho therapy techniques should solve your problem. Let me know if you are willing to undergo counseling sessions and tailor made psycho therapy through mobile. Take care.

Hi doc i'm studying b. Tech .I'm unable to concentrate on my studies whenever I go to study i'm getting sleepy or mind is diverting like thinking something else. Will you please suggest me how to get concentrated on studies.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
At your age and with the course you are doing there may be a lot of distractions going on that may be the cause of the problem. In your case the subject may have reached boring proportions and so it may not find appeal to your mind. In that case the drowsiness will prevail. You could try group study to generate some interest because of the others involvement. Also, study difficult subjects in the early part of the morning when your mind is freshest and the metabolic rate; mood and energy levels are rising up to 11 am. Here are some things to do that will alleviate the situation, if you followed them meticulously. If you are under some stress, there will be difficulty remembering. So if you handled stress better, you will certainly improve. With regard to memory, it is very important that your brain and body is rested well to be able to recall whatever is required, rather comfortably. So, catch a good 8 hours of sleep every night. Puzzles pose problems to the brain that help it to use new pathways and neurons, which give the brain considerable exercise. It taxes the left brain to use logic to solve the myriad possibilities which other activities do not stimulate. Crosswords are excellent for vocabulary learning and use. Jigsaws and rubik cube stimulate different permutations to finally settle on the most likely one. Picture completion and anagrams help approach problem solving from several angles. Do sudoku, and memory co-relation activities and skills. Have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber (whole grains, fruits and vegetables), nuts, avocado, eat dark chocolate, do yoga meditation exercises, etc. You need to check out, if you are stronger visual or auditory. The visual is a better mode than the auditory. However, if you combine the two modes, you will get the best concentration. Have a special place of learning, which should be well lit, with soft painted walls, well-ventilated, with no distractions. When you get bored, study by writing. If you repeat learning at least five to seven times, you will apparently remember for a longer time. Sit comfortably but do not slouch. The reading material should be of a fairly large print. Study at small intervals of about 40 minutes and then take a break or change the subject. Short-term memory is a faculty of the left brain, and long-term memory is a feature of the right brain. When people are stressed, they tend to favor the right brain and abandon the left brain, where short-term memory resides. So, it is really very simple: deal with the stress and activate left brain functions. Here are a few suggestions to activate left brain function: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. There are some memory enhancing techniques and study methods that your teacher will be able to guide you with. You may also meet with a counselor to take care of the stress related emotions, and then you will fare better too.

Respected Madam, Depression is a major psychiatric diagnosis of which a depressed mood is only one symptom. Other symptoms include decreased energy, loss of interest in activities, decreased concentration, changes in sleep/appetite/activity levels/weight along with depressive and even suicidal ideas. If you still believe that you are suffering from depression and if you have many of the symptoms mentioned above, the best course of action would be to consult with a local psychiatrist who could evaluate you in detail and confirm your diagnosis. He/she should also be able to treat your current depressive symptoms with medicines or therapy depending on the severity. Thank You Madam and Take Care.
