I recently acquired snoring. How to get rid of it? Is this genetic? My parents also snore.

BAMS
Ayurveda, Bangalore
Hi, Please follow these tips to stop snoring: - Reduce your weight if you are obese. - Perform pranayama (breathing exercises) everyday. - Quit smoking which irritates the mucosal layer of the nose and throat and causes blockage and results in snoring. - Quit alcohol and sedatives which relax the throat muscles and results in snoring. - Sleep on sides instead on back. - Elevate the head by using a thick pillow which eases the breathing. - Clear the nose before going to bed. - Establish regular sleep pattern. - Keep the bedroom air moist by using humidifier; as dry air irritates the mucosal membrane in the nose and throat. - Perform throat exercises like repeating the vowels a, e, i, o, you loudly for 2-3 mins few times a day or keeping the tongue behind the teeth and moving it backwards - 3-4 times a day. - Anti snoring appliances can also be used. It is not genetic. Causes of snoring are obesity, nasal problems such as blocked nose due to nasal septal deviation, polyp or sinusitis, Smoking, consumption of tobacco, intake of alcohol, sleeping pills, relaxed throat muscles in elderly and tonsillitis in children.

Hi lybrate-user. If it's a small hole in the drum, we could address it by minimally invasive procedure called fast plug myringoplasty. If the hole is little bigger, then we need to do a procedure called tympanoplasty.

I am suffering from sinus problem since last 1 years as soon as dust or cold gets in conditions go bad is there any cure?

Diploma in Otorhinolaryngology (DLO), MBBS
Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist, Bangalore
Looks like an allergic problem. The sinus openings get blocked & the sinuses do not get aerated. That is why one gets the headache. There is hyperactivity of the nasal mucosa as soon as dust or weather conditions prevail. Covering the nose when you go out might help a bit. Get a nasal endoscopic examination done to rule out any other nasal pathology. Consult an ent surgeon.

The most common cause of vertigo after a fall or trauma in elderly is bppv (benign paroxysmal positional vertigo). If the vertigo is more on turning in bed or getting up from bed and lasts for few seconds to minutes, then this could be his diagnosis. A simple positional test by an ent can confirm this followed by some exercises which can solve the problem.

Hello lybrate-user, as you told about your scalp psoriasis, yes we can manage scalp psoriasis in a better way. You must have tried some steroidal lotions and some shampoos but disease will come back. We are treating psoriasis using ayurvedic medicines. We can provide you a oil to be applied at night. You can apply same oil on scalp on sunday or holiday and sit in sun for 15 minutes. We can manage it like that the disease does not come back. Internal ayurvedic medicines will be provided for blood purification. You can contact clinic for more details.

If problem is not solved in 2-3 days, you may need additional medicines. Techniques to steam 1) Boil a pot of water. 2) Pour water into a large flat pan or bowl. If you use a casserole, water will remain warm for longer duration. 3) Place your head over the bowl at a distance of 1 feet. 4) Cover your head and bowl with a large towel (like a tent), take long breath through your nose and breath out through mouth. Take a break every 1-2 minutes until you feel relatively cooler. Do it for 10 minute twice or thrice a day. If you feel that the treatment is getting too much for you, raise the towel so that fresh air is brought into the area and breathe through your mouth a couple of times and then resume Take care - Take all precautions while dealing with hot water. Also, keep children away and wan others that you are dealing with boiling hot water. Other way is - by an Electric steamer available in market and take steam through it.
