3 Ways To Diagnose Herpes!

Herpes is caused due to the presence of the herpes simplex virus in your body. Herpes can appear on multiple areas of your body, but more commonly manifests in the genitals as well as the mouth. The two types of herpes are HSV-1 (oral herpes) and HSV-2 (responsible primarily for the outbreak of genital herpes).

Causes of Herpes Simplex:

  1. Herpes is contagious in nature and can be passed to you by having sexual intercourse with anyone who has been infected. HSV 2 is the primary form of the virus, which is transmitted in this manner.
  2. Herpes could be transmitted to an infant from their mother if she was infected while pregnant
  3. It can also get passed through direct contact like using the same plates or spoons or even the sharing of lip balm. Even kissing can spread the virus if the infected person has cold sores.

Symptoms of Herpes Simplex:

  1. The presence of blistering sores within the mouth or in the genital area is a telltale sign that you may have contracted genital herpes.
  2. If you are having painful urination then you should check with your doctor for the herpes virus.
  3. Continuous itching in certain areas such as the genitals.
  4. Not wanting to eat, having a fever could also be symptoms of herpes simplex virus in your body.
  5. Herpes can spread to your eyes and is known as herpes keratitis. It can cause pain in your eyes.

Diagnosis of Herpes Simplex:

  1. The common way to diagnose herpes is with an actual physical exam. Doctors will generally look out for sores on your body and may also check for some similar symptoms which might indicate herpes simplex.
  2. HSV testing (alternately called herpes culture) is done to check the presence of a virus on the genitals. A fluid sample from the genitals is sent to laboratory for tests and will require a visit to the health center.
  3. There are blood tests to look for antibodies for both forms of HSV to diagnose the infections. However, this test is done only when there is and absence of sores or visible symptoms. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor and ask a free question.

I am having regular cold and running nose. I have dust allergy too. What should I do to stop the cold?
Dear Lybrate User, Hundreds of different viruses can infect the respiratory system and cause colds and the flu. The respiratory system is your throat, sinuses, windpipe (trachea) and lungs. Symptoms such as runny nose, sneezing, sore throat, head congestion and cough can also be caused by allergies. If you often get symptoms of a cold or flu, there could be three reasons: 1. You are exposed to more respiratory system viruses than most people 2. You are more susceptible to catching respiratory viruses than most people 3. Your symptoms are really caused by allergies. (You call the symptoms "colds" but they are not caused by viral infections.) Any adult who is exposed to young children a lot, such as parents and teachers, is exposed to all the viruses that children carry. For Complete Cure you can take Homeopathy Treatment for same as Homeopathy has a great scope to treat Cold, flu and variety of Allergies. For Treatment you can consult online. Take Care.

Semen leakage from the vagina is normal and to be expected when there is enough of the ejaculate. However some of it remains in the back of the vagina (in the posterior fornix) and an even smaller amount makes its way up through the cervix, into the uterus and down the fallopian tubes. It doesn't decrease your chances of conceiving.

Ligament Injury Of Knee - How Arthroscopic Surgeries Can Help?

MS - Orthopaedics

Ligament Injury Of Knee - How Arthroscopic Surgeries Can Help?

Our knee is supported by several ligaments which help in movement. But what happens if you tear a crucial knee ligament? Tears or 'ruptures' in ligaments of the knee are common in sportsmen and/or accident victims, especially of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).

Though the ACL is not the only ligament of the knee, it is one of the most crucial to maintain stability of the knee joint. Any tear of this ligament frequently leads to chronic knee instability. When a tear in this ligament happens, patients know it immediately as they report feeling or hearing a “pop” along with pain and a feeling of an unstable knee.

Types of ACL injuries
ACL injuries can be classified by the amount of damage to the ligament. They can be partial or complete tears.

  • Grade I Sprain: In this there is some stretching and micro-tearing of the ACL, but it is otherwise intact. This does not require surgery.
  • Grade II Sprain or partial disruption: In this there is some tearing and separation of the ligament fibres and the ligament is partially disrupted. Usually, the knee joint is also moderately unstable. Arthroscopy surgery may be required.
  • Grade III Sprain or complete disruption: In this, there is total rupture of the ligament and the ligament is completely disrupted and the joint is unstable. Surgery is usually recommended for the young and active.

Treatments
There are many different ways that this ligament can be reconstructed depending on the age, activity level, and gender of the patient. ACL tears can be treated using arthroscopy and minimally invasive surgical techniques.

Though non-surgical methods are available, like rehabilitation and physical therapy, they don’t help much with complete ACL tears.
1. Exercises- this helps to increase the range of motion of the injured knee, decrease the amount of swelling, and maintain muscle control.
2. Arthroscopic surgery for reconstruction of the ACL

It can be of 2 types- Repair and reconstruction of the ACL.

  • A repair means that the injured ligament is left in place and the doctor tries to fix it back to the tibia or femur bones of the leg from which it has torn. This is a half-baked option as it does not restore full knee function.
  • A reconstruction, on the other hand, means that the ACL is substituted by a new ligament. The surgeon creates a soft tissue “graft” and uses it to reestablish knee stability. The body populates the graft with living cells and permanently attaches it in place. And, it usually takes about 4 to 6 months for the graft to start functional like the real ACL. Reconstruction surgeries help patients to get back to the same or higher degree of activity without pain or instability. The ‘graft’ usually comes from 2 sources
    • Taken from elsewhere in the patient’s body, called an autograft
    • Donated by donors, called an allograft

Knee arthroscopic surgery is a minimally invasive surgery which is done using pin hole cameras and under general or local anesthesia. The torn ligament is removed and the graft is introduced in its place and secured.

Post surgery outlook

  • Immediately after the surgery, the patient is placed in a brace. He or she can leave the hospital the same day if he/she wants.
  • The patient has to use crutches for preventing putting weight on the operated leg.
  • After-care is crucial for full functioning of the operated knee. The early postoperative period is devoted to restoring motion and decreasing swelling. After this the focus shifts to strengthening the knee joint.
  • The recovery of function following an arthroscopic ACL reconstruction continues over a few months and it usually takes 2-3 months for the patient to feel normal.

As long as the operated knee is cared for properly and other injuries are avoided, the benefits of the surgery are usually permanent.

Rheumatology Patients - How They Can Manage Pain?

MBBS, MD-Medicine, DM - Clinical Immunology

Rheumatology Patients - How They Can Manage Pain?

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder. It affects the joints as well as the skin, lungs, heart, eyes and blood vessels. This condition is most notorious for the pain and discomfort it causes in the joints. Unlike osteoarthritis, it does not attack the cartilage but affects the lining of the joints.

This results in erosion of the bone tissue and can even cause deformities. There is no known cure for this condition and treatment is mostly focused on relieving the pain caused. Some of the ways to manage your pain are:

  1. Medication: Medication can help control the inflammation and pain caused by rheumatoid arthritis. Disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs or DMARDs are usually the first course of treatment. These may be accompanied by steroids and help reduce inflammation. The best medication to relieve pain is non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDs. In some cases, stronger pain relievers may be prescribed but these should be used cautiously. Excessive dependence on pain relievers can cause addiction.
  2. Change Your DietA diet rich in Omega 3 fatty acids can help control inflammation. In turn, this can help relieve discomfort and slow the progression of the disease. Cold water fish and fish oil supplements are rich sources of omega 3 fatty acids. In addition, it is important to have a well-balanced diet and to avoid excessive carbs and sugars that can lead to weight gain. It is important to note that heavier people suffer from more pain as their weight puts pressure on the joints.
  3. Exercise Regularly: Rheumatoid arthritis makes movements difficult and hence exercising may seem counterintuitive but this can help in the long run. Avoid high-intensity workouts and pick low-intensity activities like walking, cycling, swimming etc. Water aerobics is one of the best forms of exercise for rheumatoid arthritis. Yoga can also be very beneficial. Regular exercise is important but it is also important not to overdo it. Put exercising on hold during acute flare-ups and avoid doing anything that increases your pain. It is a good idea to consult a physical therapist to know what the best type of activity is for you.
  4. Hot and cold packs: Heat and cold therapy can help relieve pain immensely. A hot pack will help relax the muscles while the cold pack will numb the pain. Heat packs and cold packs can be used alternatively. Alternatively, you could soak the affected joint in hot water and cold water.

Congenital Nephrotic Syndrome - Is Your Child Suffering From It?

FIMSA, MD-Nephrology, DM - Nephrology, MD-Medcine, MBBS
Nephrologist, Delhi
Congenital Nephrotic Syndrome - Is Your Child Suffering From It?

As the name suggests, congenital nephrotic syndrome affects the kidneys of newborn babies. Though congenital means the disease must be present from birth, babies who develop nephrotic syndrome in the first three months are also said to suffer from this condition. This is a rare genetic disorder that is passed down from parents to their children. Boys are at a higher risk of suffering from this disorder than girls. The congenital nephrotic syndrome causes the kidneys to leak large amounts of protein into the baby’s urine. This can lead to swelling of the body tissues and a weakened immune system.

Some of the common symptoms of this disease include

  1. Low birth weight
  2. Lack of appetite
  3. Swelling of the body
  4. Foamy or frothy urine
  5. Lowered urine production
  6. Cough

Pregnant women are usually screened for this condition before the baby is born. The doctor will be looking for a placenta that is larger than normal in an ultrasound and high levels of alpha fetoprotein in amniotic fluid samples. If found; the doctor might ask for a genetic test to confirm the diagnosis.

Once the baby is born, he or she will show signs of fluid retention as the body begins to swell. Other signs your doctor will look out for are high blood pressure, signs of malnutrition and abnormal sounds from the heart and lungs. A urine analysis will also show high levels of protein in the urine though the overall protein levels in the body may be low. The doctor may also ask for a kidney biopsy in some cases to confirm the diagnosis.

Aggressive forms of treatment in the early stages of this disease can help control it. This may include antibiotics, blood pressure medication, ACE inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers to reduce protein leakage and diuretics to manage excess fluid build-up. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may also help reduce the amount of protein leaking into the urine. In addition, the doctor may advise you to limit fluid the baby’s fluid intake to control the swelling. As a last resort, the kidneys may need to be removed to prevent protein loss. This will be followed by dialysis or a kidney transplant.

If left unchecked, this disorder can lead to a number of complications including acute kidney failure, blood clots, infections and diseases related to malnutrition. It can also lead to the death of a baby in the first year of catching the infection or before his or her fifth birthday.

Skipping A Meal - Can It Be Hazardous To Your Health?

M.Sc - Dietitics / Nutrition

Skipping A Meal - Can It Be Hazardous To Your Health?

In the race of getting to work on time, finishing files and completing all the tasks on your to-do list, eating is sometimes given the last priority. You may think that skipping a meal does no harm, but in fact it can have quite a detrimental effect on your physical and mental health.

Here are a few things that may happen when you skip a meal

You lose muscle weight: While skipping a meal may make you lose weight, this is not healthy weight loss. Skipping a meal makes the body lose muscle weight not fat. Losing muscle weight can, in turn, lead to a loss of energy and make you tire easily.

  1. You will crave junk food: When you skip a meal, your body craves for fillers and snacks. Thus, you are more likely to binge on chips and other such unhealthy snacks. In the long run, this can make you put on weight. It can also make you eat more for your next meal.
  2. You may be less productive: Skipping a meal can make you slowdown in terms of time taken to make decisions. It can also make you physically unsteady and leave you feeling lethargic thus, making you less productive. Not eating at regular times can also make you moody and affect your ability to concentrate on tasks.
  3. Your metabolism is affected: Skipping a meal may put your body into starvation mode so as to store energy. Not only does this slow down your rate of metabolism and leave you with less energy, it can also lead to weight gain as the calories are stored as fat instead of being burnt as energy.
  4. It can increase your risk of lifestyle diseases: Skipping a meal can make your blood sugar levels drop. Not having breakfast or lunch can also make you eat a heavier dinner that elevates your sugar levels. This type of fluctuation can affect your body’s insulin response time and lead to diabetes in the long run. Skipping meals can also lead to high blood pressure and hypertension.

It can cause indigestion: Stomach upsets like gas, bloating, acidity, pain etc are very often caused by skipping a meal. This is because when you skip a meal, the stomach is left empty for a long time leading to a build-up of gastric acids in the stomach. This acid then attacks the lining of the stomach causing ulcers and abdominal pain.
