My baby is 7months old can any doc prescribed me what all foods should I start to my baby. As she is too weak.

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
My baby is 7months old can any doc prescribed me what all foods should I start to my baby. As she is too weak.
1. From the 7th month onward you can start feeding thrice a day as proper breakfast, lunch and early dinner. Now also breast feeding is the major source of nourishment to the baby, so please do not quit breast feeding. The feeding times can be around 9 am, 1 pm and 5 pm 2. The quantity for each feed in this month will be roughly the size of your baby’s fist and in terms of liter around 90 to 100 ml. 3. The consistency can be little thick and should stay in the spoon without spilling off. 4. Always feed a baby seated and not in sleeping position. 5. Sterilize all the utensils that are being used for cooking and feeding. 6. Please follow the 3 Day Rule before introducing any new food. I have structured the charts in a such way that the baby is gradually introduced to heavier diets, so I would advice you to follow the same order. First Week DayBreakfastLunchEarly Dinner MondayRice Cereal (HM)Plain KhichdiApple Puree TuesdayOats PorridgePlain PongalVegetable Soup WednesdaySooji KheerCarrot KhichdiPear Puree ThursdayBarley porridgePlain Ghee RiceBanana Puree FridayOats KheerFlavoured PongalGrape juice SaturdayBrown Rice UpmaRagi PorridgeCarrot Beet Soup SundayPotato PureeTomato KhichdiChickoo Puree If your child is weak some tests and more details need to be discussed and consult me on this site.

My 20 months baby is due for vaccination. Can anyone please tell me if pentaxim (painless) is still available with any Paediatric doctor in Pune?

Pediatrician, Chennai
My 20 months baby is due for vaccination. Can anyone please tell me if pentaxim (painless) is still available with an...
Hello lybrate-user. First of all I want to make it clear to you that there is no absolutely painless vaccine. Every vaccine, whether large or small needle is used, has to be given by prick only. And this will surely cause some pain for your baby. Inj. Pentaxim consists of DPT, IPV and Hib. 5 components. It has not been available for quite some time now. Hence most of the doctors give oral polio drops and quadravax injection with DPT and Hib. Anyways you can enquire with nearby doctors once. Hope this helped you!

Behalf of my wife am posting this question. Recently we are blessed with a baby girl. Delivery was not normal. My wife keep feeding for more than 30-40 mins. She keeps feeding else baby cries. Per day she feeds more times. Can someone pls advise what kind of food my wife have to take? We don't know really is this is a problem or milk is not enough for the baby from mother. How to check it? I heard moms use to feed for 10-15 mins. But in our case duration is not normal. Pls clarify us what we have to do.

Certification in Robotic surgery in Gynecology, MRCOG (LONDON), Fellowship in Gyn Endoscopy, MD - Gynaecologist & Obstetrician, MBBS

Its perfectly normal to feed for 30/40 mins initially. Breast feeding is the biggest challenge that the new parent faces. As long as the baby is gaining weight as required her feeding is adequate.Just grit your teeth and be at it for the first 3 months...then it will be a cake walk!

Importance and Tips to Maintain Healthy Milk Teeth

Importance and Tips to Maintain Healthy Milk Teeth

The appearance of the milk teeth is one of the most awaited landmarks in a child's life. The first teeth to erupt are usually the lower front teeth during 6 to 8 months of life, and the last milk tooth to fall off is at 12 to 14 years of age. The playful nature of teeth, difficulty to make them maintain good oral hygiene, and the food habits put the children at increased risk of dental disease.

Very often, because they are in place for a shorter duration, parents tend to ignore decay in the milk teeth. But whether it is decay or gum disease or broken teeth, it is important to immediately treat them.

Listed below are some functions that milk teeth play:

  1. Eating: They may be exerting slightly lesser force than the bigger permanent teeth, but they still play a significant role in chewing and digestion. Children with weak, missing, or decayed molars have poor nutrition and food habits due to their inability to chew food well.
  2. Esthetics: A child with a good set of teeth and an open smile is loved by all. This adds not just to the beauty of the child but also to his self-worth and self-esteem. These children feel more confident and are more social.
  3. Speech development: A good set of teeth are essential for the child's speech development. Improper spacing between teeth or lost tooth not replaced can lead to speech issues.
  4. Space Maintenance: In addition to the above functions, the milk teeth also help to preserve and "maintain" the space that is required for the permanent teeth. As the permanent tooth nears eruption, the milk tooth, gets resorbed, becomes mobile, and finally falls off. In cases where the primary tooth was lost and not replaced, the space may be reduced due to movement of the adjacent and opposing tooth into this space.

Given the above reasons, it is very important to take good care of the primary or milk or deciduous teeth. Some simple things to do would be:

  1. In the very early stages, before regular dental care can begin, the teeth can be wiped off with a gauze wrapped on the finger.
  2. By the first year of life, brushing should be introduced along with rinsing after each meal.
  3. A biannual visit to the dentist for oral prophylaxis with regular cleaning should be started by first year of life.
  4. If the dentist identifies the child to be prone to decay, fluoride application and/or pit and fissure sealants should be used.

These are sufficient reasons to take care of the primary teeth, which play a very important role. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a dentist.

Rice based items like idli, porridge, soft cooked rice etc with less spices will help to increase the consistency of stools. Curd is also useful.

How To Manage Diabetes

How To Manage Diabetes

High blood sugar occurs when the insulin in the body fails to metabolize the sugar from the food, which raises the amount of glucose in your blood. It is a metabolic disorder which can be managed effectively with the help of lifestyle modifications such as exercise and food. This article is going to focus on the foods that you can eat to lower your blood sugar levels.

Here are 9 foods that you can use to reduce blood sugar levels:

Cinnamon: Cinnamon is a herb which is very effective in getting your blood sugar down to manageable levels. You can simply sprinkle cinnamon on your food before eating it.

Fenugreek (methi): Fenugreek is a common spice which is used in almost all indian cuisines. It has a number of health benefits, one of which is reducing blood sugar levels. Soaking fenugreek in water and then drinking it the next day is a very effective remedy in combating sugar problems.

Garlic: Not just for sending away the vampires, it is also very effective in blood sugar control. Extracts of garlic have been shown to increase insulin in the body which is required to metabolize the sugar in the body.

Heart healthy fats: Heart healthy fat based foods such as nuts and seeds are good for increasing the good, cholesterol levels (hdl) in the body. Avocadoes contain nutrients which lower the risks of various diseases such as diabetes. In a nutshell, these fats make the cells of the body less resistant to insulin.

Blueberries: Blueberries contain anthocyanin (water soluble pigments) which is very good for your health. They also contain fiber in large amounts which make you feel fuller faster. This fruit has also been shown to improve insulin sensitivity in the body.

Vinegar: Vinegar is an age old remedy to control blood sugar levels; it contains acetic acid which causes a reduction in certain harmful enzymes in the stomach. Vinegar is also known to prevent blood sugar spikes when consumed with food.

Complex carbohydrates: Complex carbohydrates raise your blood sugar but not like its cousin, simple carbohydrates. Simple carbohydrates cause an immediate spike in your blood sugar levels where as complex carbs provide a steady stream of energy. So drop that packet of refined flour and get that whole wheat variant.

Cherries: Cherries, especially tart cherries and dark sweet cherries, are full of anthrocyanins. Insulin resistance prevents insulin from working properly to control blood sugar in normal ranges. Eating a diet high in anthrocyanins can mean improved use of insulin and lower blood sugars.

Nuts: People who eat nuts regularly have lower rates of heart disease than people who don't eat them. Even among the healthiest eaters, the ones who also eat nuts boast the best health record. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult

When child is hungry, he shall definitely like to eat but of his own choice rather yours. It is just possible that you may be forcing your choice. Give him all edible well nutritious items prepared at home of his choice including milk and its products. Sucking of fingers must have started at his early age for the reason he may have not been given food of his choice and kept hungry. I hope this may help.

Viral infection is most common cause of diarrhea. It subsides by its own in 5-7 days. Only treatment is that give him home made soft bland diet like rice, khichdi, boiled potatoes, curd, tender coconut water etc along with plenty of water and ors. Keep watch on urine output and activity of baby. If looking lethargic consult paediatrician. But if stool is greenish, sticky or bloody then it should be checked in lab and if any pus cells, mucus, blood or parasites are found then only antibiotics should be given.

Babies need complementary solid foods along with breastmilk after the age of six months. You can start by including curd, fruits like banana, mashed papaya, veggies like mashed potatoes. The food that you give to your baby should preferably be home cooked and should have a thick, soft consistency.

It appears that your son remains alright in day time but does not sleep at night since quite long time and he closes his eyes while crying. Closing eye during cry is not abnormal. Most likely your child remains hungary. Try to feed him of his choice item.

Dear , you have heard correctly, babies can pass 8 -10 motions daily or pass a motion after 2-3 days. Both patterns are normal, as long as the motion is soft and formed, i. E, between very loose and very hard. Make sure you feed him at a gap of at least 3 hours, and only your feeds.

Most of the preterm babies loose 15% body weight and starts regain after 15 day. Expected wt gain is 20- 30 gms on dialy basis. What your feeding now is good. Instead of bottle feed, start spoon feeds. Look for dilution of milk, 1 scoop for every 30 ml of water. Do not stop breast milk.
