Causes and Symptoms of Urinary Tract Infection

MBBS, MS - General Surgery, Mch urology
Urologist, Bangalore
Causes and Symptoms of Urinary Tract Infection

Infection caused in the kidneys, bladder, urethra or the ureters is known as urinary tract infection. According to doctors, women are generally more at risk of suffering from this condition than men.

Some of the causes which contribute to the development of this infection are:

  1. Invasion of bacteria: Like any other infection, one of the causes of urinary tract infection is the invasion of the bacteria Escherichia coli in the bladder. This type of bacteria is most commonly found in the gastrointestinal tract and is most often held responsible for urinary tract infection.
  2. Spreading of the bacteria from anus to urethra: The spread of the gastrointestinal bacteria from the anus to the urethra leads to the infection of the urethra thereby causing urinary tract infection.

Some of the symptoms of urinary tract infection are:

  1. A nagging urge to urinate: One of the most predominant symptoms of urinary tract infection is a persistent, nagging urge to urinate. You would know your urinary tract is infected when you feel the urgency to urinate extremely frequently.
  2. There is a burning sensation when you urinate: The symptoms of urinary infection are extremely visible and are felt intensely by the one suffering from it. If you feel a burning sensation while urinating, chances are extremely high that you are suffering from urinary tract infection.
  3. Red colored urine: Sometimes your urine may contain perceptible amount of blood in them. In most cases, presence of blood in urine is a definite sign of urinary tract infection.
  4. Foul smelled urine: An internal infection in the urinary tract manifests itself in different ways. One of the chief symptoms of this infection is discharging foul smelling urine.
  5. Pain in the pelvic area: Women who suffer from urinary tract infection experience excruciating pain near the pelvic area, sometimes extending to the pubic bone.

High creatinine levels of 10. Average creatinine in the last 5 months has been 3. Recurring urine infections have pushed the creatinine to this level now. Phosphorus 9.9. History of diabetes for last 15 years. However average urine output daily is 1000 ml on a fluid intake of average 1300 ml. My question is if urine output is good, is dialysis needed? I think with proper hydration we should be able to bring her creatinine levels down. Is it possible that she has such high creatinine now because of lasix 2 tabs twice daily for 1 week that caused dehydration? Is peritoneal dialysis possible and effective at this age considering she is 94 now? Should we even look at Peritoneal dialysis as she is very weak now.

what is eGFR. and blood urea and BP?high creatinine is due to diabetic nephropathy. in this case kidney are not able to filter out waste from the body adequately due to probably kidney disease due to diabetes. u can do peritoneal dialysis at home after adequate training and taking precautions against infection. it may take up to 10 day( time to heal the catheter insertion site) after the insertion of catheter to start peritoneal dialysis. readjustment of doses of medicine for diabetes will be required. good luck

Not necessary if you have learnt lessons to follow a healthy lifestyle. Genes from the side of your mother are half and genes play little role compared to wrong eating and sedentary lifestyle and smoke and alcohol and high uncontrolled bp and blood sugar with high cholesterol. Take care and don't live in fear of a heart attack. Keep basics mentioned above in control and do go for annual check ups.

What first aid can we take at the time of cardiac struck.

M. D (Internal Medicine) , M B B S
General Physician,
What first aid can we take at the time of cardiac struck.
Cpr requires training. The only thing you can do is to get him to a hospital immediately. If you are convinced he has a heart attack and if he has any medications with him used for treating heart disease, then you can ask the doctor which medicine can be taken in emergency. He will tell you. Even if he takes the medication, he still has to get admitted in the hospital if he has a heart attack. There is no opd treatment and definitely no online treatment.

MBBS
General Physician, Mumbai
I have headache consistently for past few months. Seems a nerve beats here and there often. What to do?
Few things related to headache so that we can plan the treatment accordingly - if pain is associated with blurred or decreased vision than check your eye sight for refractive error - if the pain is associated with cold and fever than we have to rule out sinusitis as the cause and if the pain is pulsatile in nature and with a throbbing pain usually with an aura than we have to rule out migrane as the cause - if the pain is associated with neck problems than we have to rule out cervical spondylosis as the cause - if the pain is associated with either low or high bp or due to hyperacidity than we have to treat the cause after examination.

Hi, I am suffering from acidity, whenever I am eating something after eating I feel the same. Can anyone please help.

BHMS
Homeopath, Secunderabad
Hi, I am suffering from acidity, whenever I am eating something after eating I feel the same.
Can anyone please help.
If it is for a long period of time then you will require a course of treatment. Some simple tips to avoid acidity: eat small portions, have a cup of warm water 30 mins before having meals. Do not lay down after having food as the contents of the stomach may regurge. Sleep only at least 2 hrs after having your food. Walk for some time after food. Exercise every day. Do some yoga exercises which will help your digestion and also improve overall health. Avoid artificial flavoured food (packeged food / refined food / junk food / very oily and spicy food). Increase fibre in your diet. You should adopt these measures for a life time and not just for curing your acidity.

What is the normal blood sugar levels?

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
Pediatrician,
What is the normal blood sugar levels?
Fbs,<100 and ppbs < 140 mg/dl diabetes affects all organs in the body? eyes, kidneys, nerves, reproductive system all are affected, in fact, from toe to hair. For diabetic control, patient and doctor should be n constant touch for regular follow up and advice. It is not as easy task to control blood sugar in the desired normal range. Whatever we eat is metabolised to sugar in the body to provide energy for our daily activities. For the absolute control, one has to monitor his / her blood sugar at regular intervals (self-monitoring of blood glucose smbg). Though difficult, this can be done by a glucometer and keep a record. Get an idea of fasting sugar (fbs) and 2 hours after food (ppbs),& hba1c (inform me) and check before dinner and after every major food. The basic idea is to reduce the food intake to 1/3 of what you take now. The dictum of sugar control is diet, exercise, diet + medicine and at later stage medicine+ insulin will be needed. There are different diet plans of varying calories for each person depending on his activity & life style. For sugar control there is the need for regular advice and follow up. Just one time consultation or advice is not enough to guide a diabetic in scientifically & medically correct manner. For giving you regular follow up you ask me privately with all details like your daily eating pattern and medicines you take.
