I got a seizure attack recently and it was the first time, want to know what causes it and how can it be prevented in future?

MBBS, MD Psychiatry, DNB Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Nagpur
Getting a first seizure at your age can have multiple reasons forma mere hypoglycemia due to fasting, dehydration, use of alcohol to serious conditions like brain tumours or epilepsy. It is worthwhile to visit a physician and get investigations done before you make an opinion regarding its treatment or prevention strategies.

For last 20 years ,(Age 42, Male) I am suffering from migraine. Probably once in a week it occurs. Usually I take vasograin. 1to 2 tab, some times up to 3 tab, with a gap of 4 to 5 hrs. Is any side effect for this medicine. Any other medicine available.

MBBS, MD Psychiatry, DNB Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Nagpur
You are just taking medications for an acute attack of migraine. Being only on such medications causes tolerance as a side effect. To be precise, the pain relieving effect of a single tablet of vasograin will diminish with time and you might need increased doses. The better alternative would be to start prophylaxis treatmnet with other medication which will prevent relapses of migraine. Also associated factors like psychological stress, insomnia, anxiety, depression e, hormonal and nutritional deficiencies need to be treated for an effective management and relapse prevention. Consult a headache specialist for treatmnet. You may consult me online for the same.

Types Of Behavioral And Emotional Disorders In Children

Are you aware of behavioral and emotional disorders in children? During the developmental years of a child, constant growth and change are signified. This fact should be strictly kept in mind while dealing with behavioral and emotional disorders in children. Brain disorders like bipolar disorder, depression and anxiety disorders may affect any child during early childhood. The assistance of a mental health professional should be taken while dealing with these problems. On a global scale, almost 15% of children suffer from behavioral disorders. Among the different forms of behavioral disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity syndrome accounts for being one of the most common ones.

Here is a list of the different forms of behavioral and emotional disorders, which are observed in children:

  1. ADHD- This common mental disorder in children is more common in boys than in girls. Commonly, children affected with this disorder are unable to finish familiar tasks, plan or sit still. They may even lose awareness about what goes around them. ADHD-affected children may seem fine on some days, but on other days, they may experience disorganized and frenzied activities. This disorder may continue into adolescence and adulthood as well. There are several treatment options for ADHD, which may include medications, therapy and educational options.

  2. Autism- Children affected with autism seem to become indifferent, remote and isolated in a world of their own. They are unable to form emotional ties with other people or their peers. Autism is more likely to occur in boys than in girls. The condition may result in language delays, mental retardation, and in some cases, a child may suffer high functioning and usual speech and intelligence. This is because the brain of such children functions differently than others. Consistency is very important for managing autism in children.

  3. Bipolar Disorder- This disorder is most likely to begin in early childhood and it continues into adulthood. It is featured by extreme mood swings in the patient. A child may have extremely high or euphoric feelings, but his mood may turn into depression and sadness all of a sudden. This condition is a genetic illness, and it is often mistaken or misdiagnosed as ADHD.

  4. Anxiety- Anxiety disorders make children feel uneasy, distressed and unusually scared for no appropriate reason. Panic disorders, featured, by intense episodes of fear, which occur without any kind of provocation or signal are a common type of anxiety disorder. OCD or obsessive compulsive disorder, which is repetitive and compulsive in nature, is another type of anxiety disorder.

It is very important to treat and deal with children’s behavioral and emotional disorders at an early stage. Early diagnosis enables an early start of treatment, which prevents further degradation of the condition. If you wish to discuss any specific problem, you can consult a homeopath.

Myth: Brain Damage is Always Permanent

M.Ch, MBBS

Myth: Brain Damage is Always Permanent

Myth: Brain damage is always permanent.

Fact: The brain can repair or compensate for certain losses, and even generate new cells.
People once believed that we were born with a finite number of brain cells, and that was it for life; if you damaged any of them you could never get them back. Similarly, many scientists believed that the brain was unalterable; once it was" broken" it could not be fixed.

Now, of course, we know that the brain remains plastic throughout life, and can rewire itself in response to learning. It can also generate new brain cells under the right circumstances.

I am 68 years old and is diabetic for the last 20 years In the past I faced a problem in my eyes due to a pressure point which was responsible to damage any eyes. One of my eye used to come out' to rectify this doctors at pgi chandigarh gave me sterorides upto 50 mg. Due to which my sugar varreied from 40 to 400 and blood pressure from 100 to 200. However I to some what by adjusting me insulin dose and bp med. But due to this deveoped neuropathy in my both feats. Now I feel pain in my fingers of both feets and numbness in both feats. I would be thankfull if I get advice to cure this with medicins and not operation.

Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. Your complaints have arisen as per your history from uncontrolled diabetes which initially affected your eyes and is now causing neuropathy. You don' t require a surgical intervention when the cause is a medical one, so my advise to you is to meet up with your endocrinologist and get yourself evaluated, if he suggests to you that it is compression in lower back region for which you have mentioned no complaints, then you may come back to me and we can discuss your case in detail. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance. Thanks & regards Dr Akshay Kumar Saxena

My friend met with an accident on Saturday night due to blood clot in central part of the brain, he is in deep coma right now since that day. Please help me know he can be recovered.

PDDM, MHA, MBBS
General Physician, Nashik
The outcome for coma and vegetative state depends on the cause and on the location, severity, and extent of neurological damage: outcomes range from recovery to death. People may emerge from a coma with a combination of physical, intellectual, and psychological difficulties that need special attention. Recovery usually occurs gradually, with patients acquiring more and more ability to respond. Some patients never progress beyond very basic responses, but many recover full awareness. Patients recovering from coma require close medical supervision. A coma rarely lasts more than 2 to 4 weeks. Some patients may regain a degree of awareness after vegetative state. Others may remain in a vegetative state for years or even decades. The most common cause of death for a person in a vegetative state is infection such as pneumonia. Duration depends on the severity of the injury and patient general condition, often short; rarely more than 2-4 weeks.

PDDM, MHA, MBBS
General Physician, Nashik
Apply an ice pack to the painful area of your head. Try placing it on your forehead, temples, or the back of your neck. Take a warm bath or shower; take a nap; or take a walk. Ask someone to rub your neck and back, or treat yourself to a massage. Apply gentle, steady rotating pressure to the painful area of your head with your index finger and/or thumb. Maintain pressure for seven to 15 seconds, then release. Repeat as needed. Rest, sit, or lie quietly in a low-lit room. Close your eyes and try to release the tension in your back, neck, and shoulders.

Establish regular sleep hours. •Minimize distractions. •Your eating habits can influence your migraines. •Be consistent. Eat at about the same time every day. Don't skip meals.
