I tend to suffer from hypothyroidism. However, recent tests show that the levels are well within range. Despite of it, I tend to feel feeble, weak and fragile. Since past one month, I am feeling dizzy despite for sleeping for 7-8 hours and still tend to oversleep being unaware of the reasons behind it. Kindly provide the remedy and I shall be highly thankful to you.

Mr. lybrate-user, It would have been better had you mentioned the actual TSH values, because that would have given a clear idea as to what is referred as normal. If TSH is between 3 to 4 mU/L, then only all the symptoms are in check. Thanks.

How to maintain normal sugar levels.

If you are a diabetic one of the major challenges you face is to keep your sugar levels under control all the time. The temptation to indulge in food versus the consequences of a raised blood sugar is a dilemma you face everyday. So what is the way to deal with this situation.

It is important that you don't starve and have food enough to keep you going through the day whether you are working or not. Thus it is important to understand the food you are eating. Lets say that food can be of 2 types. Even food that will not raise your sugars too much and odd foods that will raise your blood sugar easily and quickly.

Examples of even food s are vegetables, fruits which are not too sweet and moderate quantities of rice and pulses. Examples of odd foods are sweets, sweet sugary drinks, sugar heavy products, excessive quantities of cereals and pulses etc.

So the easy way to balance your diet is to use even foods for hunger and odd foods to be avoided as much as possible.

Of course the effects of exercise and regular medications should not be ignored in managing diabetes.

Mr. Lybrate-user, from your height and weight it is clear that bmi is 25 kgs/m2, showing mild over weight. If you do not have hypothyroidism, then properly planned diet and regular exercise of more than 1 hour or preferably joining a gym and doing a workout under the guidance of a professional trainer is going to be more beneficial. In the diet you should avoid sweets, deep fried foods, sweetened aerated drinks, junk foods, pastries, other bakery items, red meat, high fat milk products, fructose corn syrup containing products & highly processed food products. Also refrain from alcohol and smoking completely. You might increase protein food intake daily, by taking 2 to 3 eggs. Consume more of green leafy vegetables, use whole grain products and whole grain flour for chapati and roti. Avoid all products made of refined flour like maida. Rigorous exercise will definitely help you shed extra fat including that on the face. Thanks.

Hi doctor I am diabetic, want to know. Can I eat roasted chana and if so what quantity should I take?

MBBS, CCEBDM
Diabetologist, Bangalore
Hi Chana is a very good source of protein and fibre. It helps in reducing cholesterol and also weight loss. I consider it as a good snack for diabetics. You can have it as a regular snack. Eat it in different forms like channa curry with roti's, chana chat or just boiled or roasted chana. Include half to a cup of chana in your diet once a day.

How to solve thyroid problem permanently? I am 21 years old. Could you pls tel me tips to avoid thyroid problem. I've hypothyroid.

BHMS
Homeopath, Faridabad
Hi. If you are suffering from chronic and high grade thyroid dysfunction or autoimmune thyroid disease, in all these cases whether you take allopathic or homoeopathic or any other mode of treatment, it would maintain your thyroid function. Do practice yoga along with these medicines. Yoga-Poses: Kalapbhati: This is a very effective form of pranayama. Sit down on the floor in a comfortable cross-legged position. Take a deep breath & then exhale quickly, while making a sound. Always remember while doing Kapalbhati – you have to forcefully and quickly exhale, but slowly and deeply inhale. Continue doing this for 10 times & then release. Ujjayi Pranayam: Sit down on the floor in a cross-legged straight position. Inhale slowly and deeply by both the nostrils. Try to make a hissing sound while you are sucking in the air. After that, stretch your inhale time for a while & then exhale as much as you can without giving any kind of pressure to your other body parts. This type of pranayama is very effective for those suffering from bronchitis, asthma & thyroid. Yoga Nidra (Corpse Pose) also works well in both hypo and hyperthyroidism in reducing stress and calming down. Foods to be avoided in Hypothyroidism: hypothyroidism causes skin to become dry. Once it is controlled with tsh levels becoming normal, most symptoms will disappear. Carrots and beet root are fine, can be eaten. Only cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, radish, mustard, peanuts, soy beans and soy containing products and coffee need to be avoided.

I am 52 year old person with diabetes and hyper tension. Due sudden death of my father in May, 2015, I also developed symptoms of Chest pain with irritation occasionally. I consulted a senior Cardiologist in Kanpur where at present I am residing. He has undergone at least 06-07 times ECG. Every time it was a normal ECG. But still, I develops chest pain with irritation. The Cardiologist also advised to under CT Angiography test. It was quite normal. Even then some times I develops some Chest pain with irritation without any respiratory problems. Now the same Cardiologist is advising me to undergo Coronary Angiography for further confirmation. My 2D echo test on heart is normal on two occasions. Please advice what to do now and where and whom I should consult.

Follow your cardiologist's advise. And start appropriate drug therapy. In the meanwhile start working on losing at least 20 kg of extra weight by intensive lifestyle modification approach. To achieve weightloss - think long term. Weight loss achieved over short term, always comes back. There is a general approach and a specific approach as per individual patients metabolic profile. Try this general approach for 4 weeks. If this works then continue. If this is not enough then revert for further assessment and customised approach. With customised lifestyle modification approaches, people over 100-150 kg are also losing weight for long term. 1. Do not eat anything sugary or sweet. Zero sweetness in diet. 2. Eat plenty of salad in lunch and dinner along with other foods. 3. Do not drink any liquid calorie like cola or fruit juices. 4. Go for brisk walks or jogging for 45 minutes every day.

Hey doctor mine thyroid all normal report came yesterday T3=132 T4=7.6 Tsh=3.49 But also i'm not conceive doctor told to me periods after 10 days we have to do ovary test evaluation will be going every month or not she told to rest now mine periods started yesterday so she want to check for pcos please tell me doctor i'm waiting.

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology
Endocrinologist, Hubli-Dharwad
Hi, tsh 3.49 milli units/l, is good, but to conceive tsh levels have to be around 0.1 to 2.0 milli units / l, so it is necessary that thyroxine dosage may have to be increased. You may go ahead with the investigations suggested by the doctor, but reducing tsh level to the limit mentioned above is a must. Similarly it is recommended that during 1 st trimester tsh should be 0.1 to 2 milli units, 2nd trimester 0.3 to 3.0 milli units/l and 3rd trimester 0.3 to 3.5 milli units/l. So please take care and thanks for the question.

Is potato eating is safe or excess eating of potato will cause diabetes? What precaution to be taken for not getting diabetes.

MBBS
General Physician,
Hi librate user, nice to hear from you, to avoid getting diabetes you should keep a watch on your diet, exercise and body weight. If you don't have diabetes in your family, if you are eating healthy food and doing regular exercise and maintaining your weight, there are very little chances you will get diabetes. Regular exercise should include cycling/ swimming/ brisk walking / jogging / any other outdoor sports activity for at least 30-40 minutes per day, 6 days per week. Thank you.

A positive test means HLA-B27 is present. It suggests a greater-than-average risk for developing or having certain autoimmune disorders. An autoimmune disorder is a condition that occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys healthy body tissue. An abnormal result may be caused by: ankylosing spondilylitis Arthritis related to crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis Psoriatic arthritis (arthritis associated with psoriasis) reactice arthritis or Reiter's syndrome Sacroiliitis (inflammation of the sacroiliac joint) uveitis If there are symptoms or signs of an autoimmune disease, a positive HLA-B27 test may confirm the diagnosis. However, HLA-B27 is normally found in a small number of Caucasians and does not always mean you have a disease. you can take tab. combiflaim sos.

MCH, MS- Surgery, MBBS

If it is in the normal range, you should continue at the same dose until advised by your treating physician. Some patients of thyroid cancer require tsh to be suppressed below normal levels, otherwise levels should be maintained in the normal range.
