YES, it can be diabetic neuropathy. long standing diabetic complication. the symptoms are pain, numbness, tingling or burning sensation particularly in lower limb extremities. there are many good medicines to provide relief, but remember the thing which benefits most in the long run is tight glycemic control.

I am 21 female and I have thyroid. I concerned a gynecologist and used some course but it was not cured. I was becoming fat day by day. So please help me how to decrease my weight and thyroid.

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology
Endocrinologist, Hubli-Dharwad
Lybrate-user, if you are on treatmnent with thyroxine tablets, then tsh should be between 3 to 4 milli units/l for complete symptoms control. In hypothyroidism there is no cure. Treatment has to go on for life time. If tsh levels are not maintained as mentioned above then efforts to reduce weight will not be benefiial. So first get that right. Thanks for the question.

Female of 60 yrs. What should be the correct level of urea and fasting blood sugar.

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
Fasting blood sugar. Less than 100 and urea In general, around 7 to 20 mg/dL (2.5 to 7.1 mmol/L) is considered normal. But normal ranges may vary, depending on the reference range used by the lab, and your age. Ask your doctor to explain your results. Urea nitrogen levels tend to increase with age.

Ayurvedic Approach Towards Hypothyroidism

Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery (BAMS)
Ayurveda, Navi Mumbai
Ayurvedic Approach Towards Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism is a hormonal disorder caused by reduced amounts of thyroid hormone. It is more common than hyperthyroidism and affects women more than men. Iodine is a main ingredient of the thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and iodine deficiency leads to hypothyroidism.

TSH is required for effective metabolism and reduced amount leads to affecting overall metabolism of the body and causing the following symptoms.

  1. Slow pulse
  2. Weight gain
  3. Reduced attention/concentration span
  4. Intolerance to cold
  5. Hoarseness of voice
  6. Irritability
  7. Inability to concentrate
  8. Depression/low mood
  9. Fatigue
  10. Swollen face and droopy eyes
  11. Dry skin
  12. Mental
  13. Premenstrual tension
  14. Muscular pain

Ayurveda believes that this is due to an imbalance between the 3 body systems - vata, pita, and kapha. In hypothyroid people, the pita is supposed to be overpowered by kapha which reduces metabolism.

Treatment is aimed at bringing out balance between the two.

The various Ayurvedic components include:
Panchakarma and external therapies like Vamana, shirodhara, virechana, basti, udwarthana, Kashaya Seka are shown to play a significant role in managing symptoms of hypothyroidism.

Activities:

Specific Asanas and Pranayamas that are directed at the thyroid have been proven to be beneficial.

  1. The most effective asana is sarvangasana or the shoulder stand. It improves blood flow to the thyroid and thereby improves its function. Matsyasana, surya namaskara, pavan muktasana, and halasana are also beneficial for hypothyroid patients.
  2. Ujjayi is the most common pranayama which acts on the throat area and stimulates reflexes in this area.  Nadi shodhana pranayama also is proven to have beneficial effects on the metabolism.

Internal remedies:

Appetizers and digestive agents are given to improve metabolism. These include herbs and whole grains and specific food products including dairy products.

Food Changes:

Food has a major role to play, and some of the do's and don't's are as follows.

  1. Increase water consumption, preferably warm water, to improve digestion
  2. Include more iodine-containing foods like white onions, fish, shellfish
  3. Include more whole fibers like brown rice, barley, green gram, Bengal gram, cucumber, and sugarcane juice
  4. Increase consumption of milk and milk products
  5. Avoid sour food items
  6. Herbal products recommended for hypothyroidism include kanchanara, (purple mountain ebony), jatamansi, shilajita, gokshura, Brahmi, and punarnava
  7. Apply a paste of jalakumbhi which helps by supplying iodine to the goiter directly
  8. Jalakumbhi juice can also be consumed daily (11 to 22 g)
  9. Coconut oil, being rich in medium chain fatty acids, increases the body's metabolism and helps in managing symptoms of hypothyroidism

Lifestyle Changes: In addition to the above, meditation and regular exercises to maintain a healthy lifestyle, reduce stress, and manage weight have shown to help control symptoms to a large extent.

Hypothyroidism is a chronic condition but can be managed with a combination of food, exercise, and lifestyle changes.

Hello Doctor, I want to know the reason behind my mother's sudden death. When I came from college, I saw my mother lying in kitchen, there was no scars, no pain, it seemed like she is normally sleeping in peace. I called ambulance, but they said that my mother is no more. I asked the reason to them, then they requested to do post mortem. I can not see post mortem happening with my mom's death so I refused. I do not know the reason what happened with my mom. I can tell you step by step whatever I know which may help you to find the exact reason behind my mother's sudden death. 1) My mom was a diabetic patient since 10 years and it was normal usually does up and down between 100 to 300. 2) Mom got injury on head due to table corner attack onto her head. It got swallowed so I took her to hospital in May, 2015, there they said that my mom's diabetes has been reached upto 500 and she has to be admitted in the hospital immediately to control diabetes. 3) Dr.from Hospital did treatment for 3 days and than discharged when diabetes got normal with 100. 4) We took mom at home, she was having tablets and seeming like she is recovering. 5) My mom died on 8th Sep, 2015. Prior to this day i.e. 7th Sep-she was all fine but on 8th Sep, 2015 from 1 am till morning she dint sleep. I can say she dint sleep for whole night. She said this to me while waking me up in the morning at 6 am. She also said that she dint sleep whole night DUE TO ACIDITY. 6) I than left college at 7 am by kissing her on her chick and putting her on bed to rest. She slept on bed than I do not know what happened to her as I left for college. 7) I came from college and saw my mom is lying in the kitchen peacefully, no pain on face, no scars, nothing, Seems like she is sleeping peacefully. I also saw a pan of tea, that means she had milk tea though she was having high acidity. I assume that might give her stroke and due to stroke, she might got died. But I am just assuming. Please help me knowing the exact reason behind her death. I have mentioned the whole case study and for medical records to analyse better.

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
I have read your details in length and she had a massive heart attack and due to diabetes she did not feel any pain. But what she called acidity in the previous night were symptoms of cardiac insufficiency which was misinterpreted as acidity and this happens many times in our experience

How to solve the problem of diabetes and after it can change in 1 month and you suggest me.

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology
Endocrinologist, Hubli-Dharwad
Mr. Lybrate-user, diabetes mellitus is a disease due to either insulin deficiency or resistance to its action. (t2 dm). So the solution is to take proper drugs that help in lowering blood sugar by stimulating insulin secretion and those that reduce insulin resistance. Some times insulin injections also are required. The treatment is for lifetime. There is nothing like" change in 1 month" or so. Along with drugs, diet control and exercise also are important.

I have checked my waist it was 44 inch. I am diabetic and my weight is 70 kg. My age is 26. My hba1c is 4.9.fasting 90 and postprandial 140. I take glucophage once daily.

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology
Endocrinologist, Hubli-Dharwad
Mr. lybrate-user, Your blood glucose levels are really very well maintained and even HbA1c%. I am not very sure whether you actually are diabetic. Criteria for diagnosing diabetes are: 1) Normal: FBS 70 to 110 mg, PP <140 mg / 100 ml & HbA1c% <5.9 2) Pre-diabetes: FBS 108 to 125 mg, PP 141 - 199 mg & HbA1c%5.9 to 6.4. 3) Diabetes:FBS 126 mg and above, PP 200 mg and above & HbA1c % 6.5 and above. You may be in a pre-diabetes stage, which can be reversed to normal or one can prevent or delay progressing it to diabetes, by adapting a modified lifestyle. Which means avoid sweets, deep fried foods, junk foods, pastries, other bakery items, sweetened aerated drinks, sweet corn syrup containing food products and highly processed foods. Maintain normal weight. Waist not more than 90 cms. Thanks.

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology
Endocrinologist, Hubli-Dharwad
Once diabetes is detected apart from taking proper it is essential to take suitable diet which will depend on weight, level of physical activity and sugar levels. So it is usually a patient specific diet. General things to be kept in mind are use whole grain flour (n0 maida), very little oil, more green salads, less of potatoes, use multiple grains etc.
